The 44th SEA Forensics and Debate tournament was a remarkable event that created lasting memories for all participants and attendees. The tournament was held from January 25 to 27, 2024, and it provided an excellent opportunity for students to improve their public speaking and performance skills while promoting and strengthening intercultural connections with their peers.

Students debate team

This year, the tournament saw the participation of students from eight schools, including government, private, and international schools, competing in seven categories. Twenty-eight High School students from ISKL and 119 students from participating schools took part, including the International School of Kuantan, SMK Convent Bukit Nanas, St John’s Institution, Kolej Tuanku Ja’afar, SMK St Mary, SMK Jalan Empat, Kolej Yayasan UEM, and the Shanghai American School. It is a testament to the strength of our long-term partnerships with schools in Malaysia and the region that students from these schools participated in ISKL’s longest-standing tournament.

Acting skills by the contestant

The event provided HS students from ISKL and other participating schools an excellent opportunity to showcase their abilities and learn from one another. Throughout the 3-day tournament, more than 250 speeches and performances were presented by students. Along with other schools that participated, 40 refugee students from our STEM Savers Save School community partnership club were invited to attend the Duet Acting finals. Coordination was required from around 350 volunteers, who acted as judges, timers, and prep room supervisors. These volunteers generously donated their time and efforts to ensure the smooth running of the event.

Congratulations to all the participants involved. Their impressive preparation skills and hard work were evident, making it an unforgettable experience for all who attended. It takes a lot of courage and determination to perform on stage in front of judges and fellow students.

Many thanks also to our exceptional parents and faculty who volunteered their time and judged for this tournament: Heidi Etel, Mary Davenport, Pratik Nowlahka, Riddhi Shah, Shaun McElroy, Aparna Seshagiri, Darla Ridlon, Hillary Smith, Jeff Farrington, Katherine Plumley, Nadya Malashich, Richard Martin, Mark McKenzie, and Tracy Woodward. In addition, a special mention goes to Alumni faculty member Lesli Muri for the most rounds judged – 9 rounds and ISKL parent Hanis Hassan for judging ten rounds!

Thanks to all participants, parents, faculty, alumni, community partners, and volunteers who made this event successful. We look forward to seeing everyone back on the stage next year for the 45th SEA Forensics and Debate!
