ISKL champions personal growth, development, and self-directed learning, together with an inclusive education support system that nurtures all learning needs with a school-wide student support, and counseling program. Our educational approach is incorporated into our school’s motto to Be All You Are, which encourages our students to explore their passions and interests, achieve their goals, and better understand themselves.
WHY YOU SHOULD CHOOSE ISKL
At ISKL, our success in preparing students for their future depends on how well we support them in developing 21st century skills today. Specialist Elementary and Middle school programs to help students become self-directed learners and the introduction of innovative academic options in High School such as PRAXIS 2030 and Pursuits to complement the IB Diploma Programme, ensure our students are future-ready. Our approach is based on research, best practice and our School-wide Learning Results (SLRs) – Think Creatively, Collaborate Constructively, Reason Critically, Communicate Effectively, Learn Enthusiastically, and Live Ethically. In line with this, sustainability and service learning are embedded within the curriculum to ensure students learn how to take action to affect change now and in the future.
ISKL offers a robust international curriculum that combines leading North American educational frameworks with global best practices. Student progress is monitored and regularly assessed using international standards-based assessment frameworks that focus on 21st-century skills. ISKL is unique in offering such a wide range of high-quality, transdisciplinary pathways that enable every learner to choose the curriculum best suited to their abilities, interests, and aspirations. In addition to the prestigious International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, ISKL offers two innovative study pathways, PRAXIS 2030 (Grade 9 and 10) and the Pursuits Program (Grade 11 and 12) which focus on enhancing student agency and self-directed learning.
Strong Academic Results
From Elementary to High School, our results consistently outperform regional and worldwide averages. This includes our results in the International Baccalaureate Diploma, which typically sees over 20% of our students achieve 40 or more points, placing them in the top ten percent of IB Diploma candidates worldwide.
We measure student performance using a range of external and internal assessment tools including classroom based data and the twice yearly Measures of Academic Performance (MAP) testing. MAP is an internationally recognized standardized test and results consistently show impressive growth and improvement. The triangulation of results from testing as well as observations, discussions, and in-class activities enables our teachers to determine the best ways to support, encourage, and celebrate every student.
Experts in International Education
ISKL’s world-class faculty are forward-thinking educators who are passionate in their commitment to providing the best possible learning experience for our students. Our team of international educators are experts in their field and typically have more than nine years of teaching experience. Additionally, over half of ISKL’s International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme teachers are also IB examiners, enabling students to benefit from their insights and practical experience. ISKL’s focus on ongoing professional development ensures our faculty continue to be innovative in their approach to teaching and learning.
Whether through our artist-in-residence program which brings authors, musicians and sporting coaches from around the world to inspire and upskill our students, or our service-learning program which includes regional travel opportunities with the High School Global Action Program (GAP), students school-wide benefit from ISKL’s rich variety of global opportunities.
As an active member of a range of international school associations, ISKL students also benefit from opportunities to travel both locally and in Southeast Asia to compete with peer schools in sporting tournaments and cultural conventions.
Set on 26 acres in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, ISKL’s campus provides an advanced learning environment featuring state-of-the-art academic, arts, and athletic facilities. Alongside world-class science laboratories, classrooms, art facilities, and three libraries, the school also includes flexible spaces designed to incorporate the latest in teaching and learning concepts. With extensive playing fields, an Olympic-sized 400m track, two gymnasia, a climbing wall, tennis courts, and a standout Aquatics Centre, the new campus boasts leading-edge sports facilities. The Performing Arts Centre comprises two theatres and an atrium amphitheatre, and provides an impressive setting for school performances, musicals, and exhibitions.
There are many things that set ISKL apart from the many international schools in the region, including our status as a not-for-profit, parent-governed school. This means that revenue generated by tuition at ISKL is reinvested back into the school enabling us to provide our students with the best international educators and learning environment possible. Our not-for-profit status enables us to put our students at the center of decision-making and ensure we provide a rich variety of opportunities to enable every learner to discover their full potential.
When you join ISKL you automatically become part of a friendly, dynamic, and inclusive community comprising 1,700 students, families representing over 65 nationalities, faculty and staff from around the world and our global alumni community. The ISKL community also extends beyond school with students involved in clubs and activities that affect change both locally and regionally. Whether starting school for the first time or transitioning from another school, our support framework and culture of care and empathy ensure both students and families feel at home from the moment they enroll.
As a school that celebrates diversity, our diverse student base enriches our whole school community and creates an environment based on mutual respect and understanding. Our curriculum and co-curricular program has been specifically designed to include diverse cross-cultural experiences that promote global awareness and an international mindset.
This global mindset ensures that ISKL students are in demand by universities around the world. Complemented by the flexibility and individualization of the curriculum students are best placed to apply to their universities of choice, in their countries of choice.
Culture of Care and Empathy
Our culture of care and empathy supports students in learning how to consider the perspective of others, collaborate constructively, communicate effectively, and live ethically. Starting with The Melawati Way in Elementary School – ‘take care of yourself, take care of others, and take care of this place’ – ISKL’s nurturing culture supports students in transforming conditions for themselves, others, and our world. In addition to fostering personal and social responsibility, this also creates an environment where students can take calculated risks, learn from success and failure, discover what brings them joy, what interests them and what they are passionate about.
Specialist Counseling Program
The years of Early Childhood through High School are critical periods for developing positive attitudes, skills, and knowledge around health and well-being. Our specialist counselors are important stewards of our student’s emotional health and well-being and are a critical component in providing a holistic education at ISKL. They support students in navigating the emotional, social, and academic challenges associated with each stage of their development.
In addition to classroom lessons and grade-level advisory programs, our schoolwide counseling program also includes topical workshops for students and parents, one-to-one and small group counseling, transition support and university admission, careers, and beyond-school guidance.
Being a fully inclusive school means ISKL serves the academic, social, emotional and development needs of every member of our student population. Programming is designed to ensure equal access and opportunity for all students to find their passion and succeed. Our school-wide Student Services team comprises Learning Resource specialists who provide tiered support depending on individual needs, English as an Additional Language (EAL) teachers, and counselors, all of whom are integral to supporting the academic and well-being needs of every learner. Our Life-Centered Education program supports students with significant intellectual, learning, or developmental differences.
