The Elementary School was vibrant with students, faculty, parents and staff in their colorful traditional outfits to celebrate Hari Raya one of the celebrations of our host country. The local community was present to demonstrate and conduct workshops to our students on most traditional aspects of the culture.

These activities took place along the hallways of the campus and students had the opportunity to experiment with a range of traditional activities, which included weaving “Ketupat” a local rice casing using coconut leaves, watching how “Kuih Putu Kacang Hijau”, “Roti Jala” is made, hands-on cooking sessions of making “Kuih Siput” and “Ondeh Ondeh” also known as “Buah Melaka”.

Students also learned to tie the “Sarong” and the boys had the opportunity to use the traditional Malay headgear, the “Songkok”. Students sampled a variety of local delicacies from an array of Raya cookies.

In Art, they weaved simple traditional weaving techniques, in Music they danced a Malay dance, and in PE, they played local traditional games that were popular long ago.

The highlight of the cultural day was when the whole school came together for a celebration assembly. The students were treated to dance performances by professional dancers who performed various styles of Malay dances such as “Joget”, “Inang”, “Kurik Kundi” and “Zapin”. It was a day of cultural awareness of the culture and customs of the host country.
