“See what our students, parents, alumni and faculty, both past and present, have to say about ISKL.”
At ISKL, we believe that all community members are an integral part of our ISKL family. We are honored to share some of these ISKL testimonials from across our community and invite you to see what makes learning, and working at ISKL, such a rewarding experience.
The Fike Family
Our Family is so grateful for the support and opportunities that ISKL has given our children. We are so proud of the mature global citizens our children have become while thriving in the ISKL community.
My first year as a middle school teacher has confirmed that ISKL lives up to its strong international reputation. What stands out immediately is that faculty, staff, and students, are genuinely excited to be here. It's an engaging and nurturing, yet challenging learning environment.
My husband and I are also impressed with the programs of study, activities, and extracurricular opportunities provided for our two daughters in the elementary school. In the past week alone our kids were able to work with a visiting poet in class, participate in several different after-school sports and clubs, and volunteer in a local children's hospital on the weekend.
At ISKL, there truly is a focus on the whole child. When our friends and family at home inquire about how our kids are adapting, the answer is always the same. They are thriving. We all feel incredibly fortunate to be a part of the ISKL family.
As an Alumnae of ISKL, I look back on my time at the school with much fondness and pride. I'll forever be thankful for the tireless dedication of the teachers and staff, the wide variety of activities available, and the overall warmth of the community. My family and I appreciate all that ISKL has done and provided for us over the years, and still continue to do so years after my graduation. It has been a great ride - thank you ISKL!
ISKL is like its own separate country; mixed with people of different races, religions, ethnicities and backgrounds from all across the world. I have grown to appreciate how interconnected the community is; how accepting students are of one another.
“Growing up within this international community has helped me strengthen my sense of identity. No matter what culture, ethnicity, religion or background you belong to, you're always going to be welcomed and valued. These experiences are like no other, and for that, I'm truly grateful for being at ISKL for all these years.
Hykl FamilyISKL distinguishes itself from our previous international schools experience by its ability to bring up children in a more realistic environment, which is so crucial for their future lives. It goes without saying that the academic standard of education is exceptionally high. The School has been extremely helpful, right from the beginning of our contact, in accommodating all the aspects of expatriate relocation. Thank you, we are very grateful for all of that.
Shamsi FamilyOur daughter Sehreen Shamsi and son Siam Shamsi are in ISKL while we are in Kuala Lumpur as expat for few years. While we loved to see our children learning and growing in a truly global campus of ISKL with peers from many countries of the world, we especially admired to see they are spending time on ‘humanity projects’ in their orientation to become responsible global citizens. Well it’s not only the students who belonged to ISKL Family, as Parents we felt in the last 2 years that my wife and I too belonged to ISKL Family. We felt it in international festivals, food carnivals, musical concerts and so on. Our family was even touched by the care of ISKL teachers and leaders during a crisis we encountered in our family in 2016. We Love ISKL!
Value of the IB
The IB helped mold me into a well-rounded person with an affinity for sport, the arts, and charity. The IB also appeals to top universities around the world and assisted me in securing places in King's College London and LSE. Public universities in Malaysia also accept the IB, which is a huge plus point.
Experience in ISKL
The scholarship certainly opened up new horizons for me. It was challenging at first, having only studied in a Malaysian public school. The teachers and staff were extremely welcoming and understanding though, that adapting was a breeze. We were encouraged to participate actively inside and outside the classroom, and various activities were organized for the benefit of the students, including in sport, charity and the arts. My time in ISKL helped mold me into who I am today, with charity playing a prominent role in my life. For all of this and more, I will forever be grateful to ISKL.
We picked ISKL because, like many parents I have spoken to, it's a 'feeling' one gets from the moment they walk through the front gates. Whether it is being greeted by the security guards with their smiling faces, or the reception staff at the office who take the time to stop what they are doing and look you in the eye when they speak to you, it happens instantaneously.
On our first visit to ISKL, our children were spoken to with kindness, respect and a genuine interest in who they were as individuals. This simple, yet often overlooked exchange, set the scene for how they would later be nurtured in their classroom environments. We are now in our third year at ISKL and each and every year they have been taught by exceptional teachers.
The ISKL early childhood program truly takes the philosophy of developing the whole child through play-based learning seriously. Within weeks of my children commencing in Prep Junior and Prep Senior, their teachers knew in great detail about their interests and strengths, as well as their family and social history. They gathered information through attentive 1:1 and group time in creation station spaces, readers and writers workshops, math sessions, discovery centers, and the extra-circular programs of art, music, physical education and world language.
On top of the high-quality academic program ISKL offers, our children have been exposed to celebration and ritual from around the world! This is probably the part that we will all miss the most. From the flag parade to specific cultural celebrations like Deepavali and Hari Raya, they have dressed up, showed up, and learned first hand about food, customs, and traditions that they would never have been lucky enough to otherwise.
So while we leave Malaysia ready to go back to our home country Australia, I am confident that I can say our children have been given the absolute best start to their education and we will miss ISKL immensely. The Melawati Way has become part of the way that our family thinks about ourselves, each other and our environment both on and off the campus. This is a testimony to a school that walks the walk and doesn't just talk the talk.
Thank you to all of the ISKL community we have had the privilege of one being a part of. You are different. Keep being different and teaching our kids about the importance of differences.
The Boyle Family
ISKL and the IB program prepared me very well for university. Since the start of autumn 2017, I have attended the Stockholm School of Economics, a well-regarded university in Europe, and I’ve felt my high school education has given me a competitive edge as compared to my classmates. Much of our university material I have either covered as part of the IB program or my teachers have mentioned it to us outside of the curriculum to enhance our learning and understanding. Taking the final IB exams in May 2017, I also felt ISKL prepared me well, with our teachers being very supportive all the way to our exams. Without such supportive teachers and such an academic community that we have at ISKL, I would never have been able to score 44 in the IB program.
Overall, I must say that the ISKL IB education helped to prepare me to study at an international university as exposure to students of different backgrounds compelled me to integrate with others and to appreciate diverse cultures from around the world.
Being a part of the ISKL community for eleven years taught me so much about who I am as a person. Academically, I learned what my style of learning is and doing the IB program taught me how to be self-motivating. More importantly, ISKL taught me how to be confident in who I am. I always knew I was different just because I was living in Malaysia, but until I came back to Boston to attend Northeastern University, I never realized how much being part of an international community impacted my life. I learned so many valuable life lessons from my teachers, coaches, and peers at ISKL. So many of my experiences that I had at ISKL are experiences that people don’t usually have until much farther along in their careers. I had the opportunity to be a student leader and to learn from so many talented students and faculty members. I’ll always cherish my memories from ISKL and want to thank everyone who was a part of my journey there.
I look back on the 8 years I spent at ISKL with pride and joy. Not only did ISKL provide me with a solid academic foundation for university, it also allowed me to grow up in a thriving international community. My time at ISKL allowed me to grow up to be very well-rounded in all aspects. In addition to preparing me well for my IB and AP Exams, ISKL allowed me to pursue my other interests at the same time with little to no stress and difficulty. Because of the never-ending support from ISKL and their utmost dedication, I am now able to study and swim at the University of Chicago, one of the most prestigious universities in the United States.
ISKL accepts students of all backgrounds, personalities and cultures, which I believe is really the defining aspect of the school. As an international school, ISKL uses an engaging yet challenging education to encourage students to go out and explore – allowing us to truly become global citizens. My high school education is filled with all sorts of experiences and stories that anyone could dream of. When I tell stories of my time in ISKL, my peers in college really can’t believe that an 18-year-old has already experienced so much.
Without a doubt, ISKL has definitely made me into the person I am today. I am truly grateful for my time at ISKL and the school will forever hold a big place in my heart. As a proud graduate of ISKL’s Class of 2017, I thank ISKL for being such a big part of my life.
I've never studied at another school apart from ISKL. Throughout my entire life, I’ve only wandered through the hallways and corridors of one school, learning under the same ceilings and writing exams over the same tables. However, I’ve been able to visit four other schools in Southeast Asia through Interscholastic Association of Southeast Asian Schools (IASAS) competitions. As a result, I’ve made friends from different sides of the world, and have been fortunate to spend time in places such as Berlin Germany, Lhasa Tibet, and Krabi Thailand as part of a multitude of programs available to students in ISKL. This school has allowed me to discover a creative and social side to my personality; ultimately leading to my passing of the IB syllabus and forming lasting relationships with friends from around the world.
I always knew that I was fortunate to have grown up in the international community, yet I never understood its full value until I began my university experience in the United States. ISKL has provided me with countless opportunities that have shaped me into the person that I am today. The ability to work on my leadership skills, participate in a variety of activities, and be challenged academically over the course of my high school career has allowed me to feel extremely prepared walking onto my college campus.
In many ways, ISKL has even given me the upper hand in various situations as it’s rare to find others that have experienced the same level of cultural diversity and been exposed to as many perspectives as students at ISKL have. I will forever be proud and grateful for all the knowledge I gained both inside and outside the classroom. I believe everyone can warrant success through hard work, but I would not be where I am today without the support and opportunities that were provided to me by my high school community. As a result, not only am I able to pursue further education at a reputable university, but I am confident that I have the skills and mindset to thrive.
Lee Jia Hui
As an IB scholar at ISKL, I bred fruit flies, starred in a musical, read Marx, and wrote poetry, experiences that taught me to see the world in imaginative ways. Throughout the two years, teachers mentored me, challenged my perspectives, and provided guidance for pursuing an undergraduate degree. My ISKL education has most definitely contributed to shaping how I think and feel about the world today, and I will always remember my time here with gratitude and fondness.
Amazing news to hear and see that International School of Kuala Lumpur is so close to opening the doors of their new campus. ISKL was responsible for my first taste of "technical drawing and design" with Mr. Stupka back in 2000/2001. I went on to finish my tertiary degree in Masters of Architecture from the University of South Australia, and now run my own Architecture practice in Adelaide South Australia. I also have the privilege of being a University Lecturer, teaching other younger minds all about Architecture and Design. Seeing this new campus is a big full circle moment for me!!
As a former old Istana Alumni, to see what this school has achieved is extraordinary. Most of my clients that I take care of in my job all know about ISKL, and they do enjoy hearing about it when I talk about our Alumni together that occur around the world. They are amazed at the connection that we as ISKL Alumni maintain with this school. And I myself am very proud to state loudly of my heritage at ISKL.
And what is has become now is the culmination of dedication not only from the board, teachers and students staff, but everybody that maintains the strength of ISKL'rs in their hearts. VERY VERY Proud to see this amazing accomplishment.
