ISKL Students Perform During Semester 1

“Where words fail, music speaks.” ~ Hans Christian Andersen

Both the Robert B. Gaw Theatre and the Melawati Theatre at ISKL were filled with many outstanding showcases and concerts throughout the past semester. Our ISKL community was entertained and enthralled by several performances from all divisions of students, from the band, strings, philharmonic orchestra, and choir, giving our students a platform to develop their inherent passions and competencies while positively impacting others and the world around them.

Here’s a summary of musical happenings for each school division during Semester 1 for 2022/23:

Elementary School (ES)

Grade 4 Music Learning Share

Grade 4 students, under their music teachers’ guidance, had the opportunity to interactively share their learning with their parents at the Melawati Theatre. They performed to a packed house of parents who were delighted to witness their child’s learning. The students demonstrated their progress, impressing everyone with their dedication and skills.

GRADE 5 BAND AND STRINGSGrade 5 (G5) Band & Strings Concert

In December, the ISKL community attended a one-hour evening performance by 114 ES G5 students at the Robert B. Gaw Theatre, with 59 students in Band and 55 in Strings. The Strings performed Twinkle Twinkle, Frere Jacques, Jingle Bells, We Will Rock You by Queen, and Bohemian Stomp by Sandra Dackow. The Band performed Good King Wenceslas, Sweetly Sings the Donkey, Ode to Joy by Beethoven, and Conquest by Brian Balmages.

The G5 music program is designed so that every student plays an instrument, with most students starting to learn their instrument in August, and it was fantastic for them to share their progress at the performance.

Middle School (MS)

MS STRNIGS AND CHOIRMS Strings and Choir Concert & MS Band Concert

Middle School (MS) students from the Choir and String classes got into the holiday mood by performing at the Melawati Theater while the MS Band entertained the audience the following day.  Many thanks to our students for their commitment, hard work, and many hours of practice resulting in wonderfully uplifting musical experiences that our whole community appreciates.

Middle & High School

IPYO & HS Choir – The Battle Begins: Video Game Music in Concert

The ISKL Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (IPYO) combined with the HS choirs to perform a concert featuring music taken from some of the most famous video games of the past 3MSHS-IPYO-Concert-November-20225 years, such as Super Mario Bros, Civilization VI, Assassin’s Creed, and Cup Head. The concert featured over 125 performing musicians ranging from 6th to 12th grade.

High School

High School Talent Show

Sixty-six students across various artistic disciplines shared their creativity, passion, and talents for a good cause. There were a total of 19 acts which included all four HS choirs, the Advanced Theater class, and small groups of musicians and dancers. All the proceeds from the ticket sales went towards Hungry for Music, a non-profit organization chosen by CAS students that collects used musical instruments and donates them to underserved youth with a hunger to play. The audience was also treated to desserts by the ISKL Cooking Class and were invited to view 2D and ceramics artworks showcased by Visual Arts students.

HS Element Talent Show-Collage

HS Band/Strings and Choir

HS curricular Grade 9-12 music students participated in a special end-of-semester celebration showcasing their talents to a packed theater of adoring fans! There was plenty of holiday cheer in the air, with lots of seasonal favorites performed, such as “Winter Wonderland.”

All these performances would not have been made possible without the passion and dedication from our music faculty and everyone behind-the-scenes who assisted in making this showcase possible this semester.
