It is always rewarding to see our students embody ISKL’s ethos “be all you are”. One such student is Cate Van Cott (Grade 11). In August 2017 Cate decided to establish a local chapter of the Young Investors Society at ISKL. Fast forward nine months and two ISKL students, Jehseok Alex Kim (Grade 10) and Tasha Mohd Tajudin (Grade 11) have won third place at the Young Investors Society Global Stock Pitch Competition held in New York City. Cate shares her story:
“I heard about the Young Investors Society (YIS) from a member of the only other international chapter, at the Hong Kong International School, and I decided to establish a local chapter at ISKL. The aim of YIS is to develop the financial literacy of young people and to introduce them to important real-life skills such as evaluating companies, understanding financial models, and buying and selling stocks.
The skills we are learning now will be invaluable in the future whether we decide to pursue a career in finance or for personal investing – or both! Together we are learning the fundamentals of how to save and invest as well as how to analyze a business and determine if it is a good investment.”
As President, Cate runs the ISKL’s YIS which meets every week. Lesson plans include recommending and investing in stocks and teaching members to think critically and evaluate businesses. Cate has also organized business and financial professional visits with speakers from the financial sector sharing their insights and experience. Members have found this a great way to find out more about careers in the financial sector and gain exposure to the different opportunities available.
Cate concludes, “It has been truly rewarding to see Alex and Tasha represent ISKL at the final of the YIS Global Stock Pitch Competition. We have all come along way in a short space of time. For me, founding and running ISKL’s chapter of YIS has been a great experience, and I am hoping that we can encourage more schools in KL to set up their own chapter.”
