Spirited: A Student-Led MS Dance Showcase

MS Spirited Blog Thumb

Just in time for Halloween, the annual Middle School Dance Show brought a creative mix of movement, magic, and a touch of spooky fun to the stage. The show invited audiences to embrace both the energy of dance and the festive chills of the season.

So much talent, dedication, and amazing energy from all five dance troupes on stage.

Five troupes, one great show! The entire cast of the MS Dance Performance united on stage for an epic final curtain call.

From eerie contemporary numbers to upbeat hip-hop routines, every performance in the aptly named Spirited show reflected the passion and teamwork of over 60 Middle School students. Dancers used lighting, music, make-up, and costumes to express their creativity while embracing the eerie spirit of Halloween.

The show’s amazing student director, rocked the stage with her moves.

While shows are always student-led, this year’s show was run entirely as an MS Agency project by one Grade 8 student director, Emily X. (‘30).  Her dedication began way back during the June/July break, and she oversaw the overall vision of the show, opening and closing numbers, crews, projection backdrops, program design, and dance production. The final result, a collection of five dance crews, each bringing its own interpretation of the theme, celebrated the power of student voice and leadership in action.

Reflecting on her experience, Emily shares, “It’s been exciting getting to work with my peers and watching them grow not only as dancers, but also as expressive artists who bring emotion and character to every step. I’m so proud of their creativity, courage, and commitment to the process.”

One of the many captivating moments from the MS Dance Show.

Karen Palko, ISKL’s Dance Director (and longest-serving Panther) for the show and Middle School PE and Dance Teacher, praised Emily’s leadership and the long-standing tradition of student-led performances at ISKL. “Student-led dance shows have been a feature of our Middle School and High School dance programs for years. Students sign up to have the experience of bringing their artistic visions to the stage each semester, showcasing the strength of the Arts at our school,” said Palko. “Each student director works with a team of students, taking on the responsibility of choosing their theme, music, costumes, choreographing, and leading their teams to an eventual performance. Emily is a shining example of what students can accomplish once they put their minds to it, “ adds Palko, who commends Emily for her dedication, determination, and commitment to the huge undertaking of being in charge of the show.

The MS Cheer Crew nailed their routine at the MS Dance Show.

The show culminated in a lively finale that brought all five crews together, bringing much energy and a huge round of applause from the audience. With its perfect balance of Halloween fun and student empowerment, Spirited reminds everyone that when passion and teamwork meet, magic truly happens both on and off the stage.
