Panthers of ISKL #347: Ben Kamsol - The Encouraging Panther

I inspire and motivate students by leading by example and setting a positive standard through my own actions. I believe that consistency and good habits go a long way.
Meet Ben Kamsol, an ex-professional Malaysian rugby player who uses his extensive training knowledge to support and supervise students and other community members in the school’s Weight Room. Ben feels rewarded by the positive impact his guidance can have on students’ well-being and confidence, and enjoys encouraging them to develop good habits and consistency in their gym behaviors.
Here is Ben’s story:
Please tell us more about yourself.
I was born and raised in Malaysia, and I currently live in Selangor with my family. I’m happily married and have a daughter who keeps me busy and grounded outside of work.
Working at ISKL is actually my first formal job. After graduating, I was a full-time rugby player and had the opportunity to represent Malaysia at the national level.
When and why did you join ISKL?
I joined ISKL in January 2019. Before officially joining, I was sometimes asked to referee touch games at the old campus, which gave me an early glimpse into how sports operate within an international school setting.
I was really interested in learning more about the international school sports seasons, and I felt ISKL would be a great place to share my experience while also continuing to grow and develop myself. It felt like a good opportunity and a natural next step for me.
Can you tell us more about your position at ISKL? What are your daily activities?
I work as a Weight Room Supervisor at ISKL. My main role is to make sure the space is safe and welcoming for everyone who uses it. This includes checking that all equipment is in good working condition and safe to use at all times.
I also assist PE teachers during classes, help support students as they learn how to use the equipment properly, and provide guidance when needed. Outside of classes, I support members of the ISKL community who use the weight room, making sure everyone feels comfortable, supported, and able to train safely.
How do you inspire and motivate your students?
I inspire and motivate students by leading by example and setting a positive standard through my own actions. I believe that consistency and good habits go a long way. I also hold students accountable in a supportive way, encouraging them to take responsibility for their effort, behavior, and progress. This helps them stay motivated while building confidence and discipline.
What is the most enjoyable and most challenging part of your job?
The most enjoyable part of my job is seeing students make positive progress, whether in their skills, confidence, or attitude. It’s really rewarding to watch them grow.
The most challenging part is encouraging students when they feel demotivated. It takes patience to help them regain confidence and stay motivated.
Can you tell us more about your hobbies and interests? What do you do after work?
Outside of work, I enjoy staying active and often exercise with my family. I also love food hunting, trying out new restaurants, and exploring local spots; they're always fun. Whenever I get the chance, I like to go on short trips with my family, explore new places, and just spend quality time together.

What is your most memorable moment so far working at ISKL?
My most memorable moment so far at ISKL was during the 2025 IASAS Rugby. I watched my rugby players come back twice from being behind by a big margin, first against TAS and then against SAS, and finish with a win against TAS and a draw against SAS. Even though we didn’t make it to the gold medal match, those games were incredible to witness. The determination and teamwork the players showed made it a truly remarkable experience.
Which of these Panther superlatives best describes you, and how does it show your Panther spirit?
I’m the Most Onz Panther (Onz means nothing is impossible) because I grew up in a sports environment, where I learned that with determination, effort, and the right mindset, challenges can always be overcome. Whether it was as a rugby player or now supporting students in the weight room, I try to live by that philosophy and show that with the right attitude, nothing is truly impossible.
Tell us why ISKL is special to you:
I Suka (Like) ISKL because of the strong support and the relationships I’ve built within the community. The working environment is positive and welcoming, which makes coming to work enjoyable every day. Being part of a team where people genuinely care about each other and the students makes it a great place to grow and contribute.
What does “Know yourself, care for all, and create a better world” mean to you?
To me, “Know yourself, care for all, and create a better world” is about balance and purpose. Knowing yourself means understanding your strengths, weaknesses, and values so you can grow and make better choices. Caring for all is about showing empathy and support for others, whether it’s students, colleagues, or the community. And creating a better world is about using what you’ve learned and the relationships you’ve built to make a positive impact, no matter how small, every day.
