Panthers of ISKL #336: Melalyn Ng - The Multi-Hat-Wearing Panther

Elementary students panthers of ISKL

As a Grade 4 teacher, I wear many hats: educator, coach, cheerleader, tech support, and sometimes a detective for missing personal items! Grade 4 is such an incredible age of growing independence, so my day is a fast-paced mix of structured learning and creative lightbulb moments.

Meet Melalyn Ng, a Grade 4 teacher whose classroom is filled with learning and laughter, keeping her students engaged, curious, and creatively inspired.

Her mix of Panther spirit and passion for teaching means a day in the life of each Grade 4 student is fast-paced and different, so they recognize themselves as individuals in a tight-knit team. Melalyn hopes that by creating an environment where students grow together, they may take these values with them far beyond Grade 4.

Here is Melalyn’s story:

Please tell us more about yourself.

Hello! My name is Mel, and I’m a Kuala Lumpur native through and through. Aside from a brief and wonderful stint pursuing my studies in London, my heart and my career have always belonged to Malaysia. I’ve spent my years teaching across various international schools here, and honestly, getting to work and live in my favorite city every day feels like a total win.

When and why did you join ISKL?

I’ve admired ISKL’s prestigious reputation from afar for a long time. At my previous school, I watched several students relocate here, and their parents couldn't stop raving about how nurturing and inclusive the environment was. Seeing those children truly thrive made me realize I wanted to be part of that legacy. When an Elementary School teaching position opened up, I took the leap and applied, and the rest is history! Now that I’m officially part of this vibrant community, I can confirm that ISKL truly lives up to its guiding statements in every sense of the word.

Can you tell us more about your Elementary School teacher position? What are your daily activities?

As a Grade 4 teacher, I wear many hats: educator, coach, cheerleader, tech support, and sometimes a detective for missing personal items! Grade 4 is such an incredible age of growing independence, so my day is a fast-paced mix of structured learning and creative lightbulb moments. Whether we’re debating perspectives in our Historical Fiction book clubs, diving into the wonders of rock formations, or investigating various possible solutions to a math problem, my goal is to keep the energy high and the curiosity even higher. I’m inspired every single day by my students’ creativity, and what a joy it is to be on this journey of discovery with them.

What is your overall vision for the upcoming semester in Elementary School?

As we head into the homestretch, my vision is for my students to transition from learners to true leaders of their own learning and personal journeys. I want them to look back at the challenges they faced in August and realize just how much smaller those hurdles look now. Ultimately, I want them to cross the finish line feeling proud of the community we’ve built together and fully empowered for the exciting year ahead, with just as much curiosity and laughter as we had on day one.

What is the most enjoyable and most challenging part of your job?

The joy of my job definitely comes from the daily connections with the students, especially the laughter, the stories, and the unique personality each child brings to the room. As for the challenge, I see it as a profound responsibility for myself, and that is the challenge of intentionality. I’m constantly asking myself, ‘How will this lesson serve them in five or ten years?’ My goal is to ensure that my teaching has longevity and provides a foundation for life, rather than just the next grade level. It’s a tall order, but it’s exactly what keeps me motivated and inspired every single morning.

We heard you have been actively involved in the Elementary School productions? What did you enjoy most about this?

I had the absolute pleasure of diving into the Finding Nemo production alongside my wonderfully talented colleagues Ciara Cheng, Nicole Miller, Robyn Steuernagel, and Susie Fisher. I took on the role of choreographer, where I had so much fun bringing the stage to life through movement and flow. It was so inspiring to see how dedicated the students were in learning their lines, songs, dances, and totally embodying the characters they were playing. It’s also incredibly rewarding to see all that hard work culminate in such success on stage!

Can you tell us more about your hobbies and interests? What do you do after work?

When I’m not working, I try to slow down and find balance in the zen of Yoga and Pilates, along with my newest challenge, strength training! I’m also a bit of a foodie who loves testing new recipes for my husband and family. Most importantly, I love hanging out with my cat, Romeo; we spend our time cuddling, playing hide and seek, and practicing my spoken (broken) French with him. He’s a very patient listener!

Who and/or what inspires you?

I am most inspired by the everyday heroes whom I work with. My Grade 4 teammates (Ailsa, Alan, Erin, Jag, Julia, Lisa, Michelle, and Noreen) are an extraordinary group of people and my biggest source of motivation. Whether we’re brainstorming a new project or leaning on each other’s humor to get through a busy week, their commitment to our students is contagious. They represent the kind of collaborative spirit that makes our school so special.

What is your most memorable moment so far working at ISKL?

A moment that truly touched my heart was when my previous Grade 4 class surprised me for my birthday. Now that they are in Grade 5 and spread across different classrooms, the fact that they took the time to coordinate a common time to visit me was incredibly moving. It’s in this moment that I am humbled and reminded that I am so blessed to be in a profession where I have the privilege of building connections that outlast the school year. We aren't just teaching subjects; we’re building a community that the kids carry with them as they grow.

Which Panther superlative and how does it show your Panther spirit?

I am The Most Baik Panther. While 'kindhearted' may be a simple word, I believe it is the most powerful tool an educator has. To me, being baik means creating a classroom where every student feels seen, safe, and valued. I am so inspired by the culture here at ISKL, where empathy and community are at the heart of everything we do. I aspire to model this spirit every day, so that it becomes a part of who my students are. I hope to pass this on to them, so they carry that kindness with them long after they leave my classroom or ISKL.

Tell us why ISKL is special to you.

I suka (like) ISKL because it is more than a school; it’s the people who make it truly special. I know I’ve found my home here because this community doesn't just speak its values; they live them every day. Since the moment I first set foot here, I have grown immensely as both a teacher and a person. It’s a place where every interaction is an opportunity to learn, and that’s what makes being a part of the ISKL family so meaningful.

What does “Know yourself, care for all, and create a better world” mean to you?

To me, this vision is about the power of small, intentional actions. Knowing yourself is the first step, and it begins with understanding that the greatest change we seek in the world must first begin within ourselves. Caring for all then becomes the daily practice of thinking beyond our own needs, rooted in empathy and respect for those around us. I believe that a better world isn't built through grand gestures, but through the little steps we take every day to be kind, present, and purposeful. It is through this collective efficacy in our small, daily efforts that we create a lasting and positive impact for everyone.
