Panthers of ISKL #324: Julia Hughes - The Global Panther

Elementary students panthers of ISKL

Cheering on my students as they grow, discover who they are, and bloom into confident learners. There’s nothing more rewarding than watching them find their spark and knowing I get to be a part of their incredible journey!

Meet Julia Hughes, an ES Grade 4 teacher born in Idaho and raised in Colorado. She has spent her career on an incredible journey, building global connections and inspiring students around the world.

Since 2003, her teaching passport has stamps from amazing places like Mozambique, China, the Dominican Republic, and Pakistan, before landing with her family right here in Malaysia.

Here is Julia’s story:

Please tell us more about yourself.

Born in Idaho and raised in Colorado, the mountains are my happy place!

Since 2003, I’ve taught in amazing places like Mozambique, China, the Dominican Republic, Pakistan, and now Malaysia, building global citizens along the way. I’m big on art, drama, and making every school day an adventure. My proudest roles? ISKL teacher and mom to an awesome Grade 9 daughter and Grade 11 son!

When and why did you join ISKL?

We packed our bags and dove into the ISKL adventure in 2024! Our family was ready for something new, and with its community spirit, ISKL was exactly where we wanted to land.

Can you tell us more about your Grade 4 teacher position? What are your daily activities?

Teaching Grade 4 at ISKL is a daily adventure, packed with fun, creativity, and big ideas! I get to watch amazing young minds tackle challenges, think deeply, and show off their awesome personalities. Being their cheerleader and helping them grow in confidence is the absolute best part of my job!

What is the most enjoyable and most challenging part of your job?

The best part of my job? Cheering on my students as they grow, discover who they are, and bloom into confident learners. There’s nothing more rewarding than watching them find their spark and knowing I get to be a part of their incredible journey!

Can you tell us more about your hobbies and interests?  What do you do after work?

My favorite hobbies? Rising early to hang out with my varsity teens (yes, even before sunrise!), getting creative in the kitchen, and dreaming about my next big hike, if only I could find more time! Best of all, nothing beats a good laugh with friends.

Which Panther are you?

🐾 The Most Baik Panther –  (Baik means kindhearted)

Share why you chose this superlative and how it shows your Panther spirit!

I’m the Most Baik Panther because I always try to lead with kindness and empathy, whether I’m working or playing. It’s all about making the world a little better, one thoughtful action at a time!

Tell us why ISKL is special to you:

I Suka (Like) ISKL because… deep down, I always knew this would be our place for my kids’ High School years. I even said it out loud a few times over the years, and now here we are! It feels a little bit like destiny, and I’m so grateful.

What is your best memory (or most memorable moment) so far working at ISKL?

My most memorable moment at ISKL was meeting my Grade 4 team for the very first time. We laughed, shared stories, and had a great time getting to know each other, instantly making me feel welcome and taking the pressure off being the new person. It was the best start I could have asked for!

What does “Know yourself, care for all, and create a better world” mean to you?

It is a gentle reminder to stay true to who I am, while living with humility and kindness. Knowing myself means being honest about my strengths and struggles, and always being open to growing and learning. Caring for all is about meeting everyone with empathy, compassion, and a willingness to lend a hand, no matter our differences. By doing my part, even in small ways, I hope to build a world where everyone feels seen, valued, and supported. Every day, I try to be a bit kinder and more understanding, remembering that small acts of care and humility can truly make a big difference.
