Panthers of ISKL 312#: Josh H. - The Sporty Panther

Elementary students swimming competition

“Basketball is a big part of who I am! I’m always practicing, pushing myself to improve, and giving my all in every game. Being the Sportiest Panther means showing teamwork, dedication, and Panther pride both on and off the court. ”

Meet Josh H. (‘30), an outstanding Grade 8 student who has been a vibrant part of the ISKL community since Prep Senior.

With roots in the United States and Australia, Josh is a dedicated athlete whose passion for basketball is unmatched. Recognized as both a great leader and a supportive teammate, he perfectly embodies Panther pride. His journey from nearly quitting to becoming a leader, inspired by a Grade 5 coach, is a testament to perseverance and growth.

Here is Josh’s story:

Can you tell us more about yourself? What grade did you join ISKL in?

My name is Josh, and I am from the United States and Australia. I love playing basketball and being a team leader. I am in Grade 8 and joined in Prep Senior. I lived in Hawaii before moving to Malaysia.

You’ve been recognized as both a great leader and a strong team player in U13 and U15 basketball. How did you balance leading the team while also supporting your teammates, and what’s one moment from playing that you’ll always remember?

I will always remember the team chemistry we had on our basketball team. We were all friends outside of school, and we loved to lift each other up.

I think a way I led the team was by scoring and rebounding, and I have supported my teammates by passing the ball and getting a lot of assists, so my teammates could score.

Who or what inspires you or has influenced you?

My coach in Grade 5 inspired me to start playing basketball, but I wasn't that good, and I wanted to quit, but he kept making me practice, and then I became good and started to lead my team.

Which Panther are you?

🐾 The Sportiest Panther

Share why you chose this superlative and how it shows your Panther spirit!

I chose this superlative because basketball is a big part of who I am! I’m always practicing, pushing myself to improve, and giving my all in every game. Being the Sportiest Panther means showing teamwork, dedication, and Panther pride both on and off the court.

Tell us why ISKL is special to you:

I Suka (Like) ISKL because I have grown up here, I've been here all my life, I love the teachers and my friends that I have been really close to. The ISKL community has helped me feel welcome since the day I got here.

What does ISKL’s vision, “Know yourself, care for all and create a better world,” mean to you?

To me, knowing myself is about understanding my emotions, skills, and myself fully as a player and a person on and off the court. Caring for others means caring for all my teammates, coaches, teachers, friends, classmates, and anyone who supports the community. As well as being kind to opponents or referees. Creating a better world is important to me because, if I create a better world, then hopefully more people will be inspired, and we can build a kind and supportive community.
