Panthers of ISKL #309: Haruma Y. (‘32) - The Karateka Panther

“Through ASA’s karate classes, I became more interested in learning about karate, so I also practice it outside of school. I enjoy training in attacks and defenses using sticks.”
Meet Haruma Y. (‘32), who is a proud member of the ISKL community, starting all the way back in Prep Junior in 2018. From his roots in Nagoya, Japan, to the vibrant halls of our Middle School, he's brought a spirit of kindness and dedication.
Whether spending six years mastering karate, or getting hands-on in a French cooking class, or simply showing a new student where to go, he exemplifies what it means to "care for all."
Here is Haruma’s story:
Can you tell us more about yourself? What grade did you join ISKL in?
I came to ISKL in 2018, during my Prep Junior year. I am from Nagoya, Japan, but I previously lived in Tokyo before coming to Malaysia.
Please tell us what Co-Curricular Activities (ASAs) you are involved in and why.
I am in three ASAs: Aqua Panthers (swimming), Karate, and French cooking. I have been at Aqua Panthers for six years and have been practicing almost every morning since I joined Middle School, starting at 6:00 am. It is hard to wake up every morning, but it is nice to practice with teammates.
I have also been practicing karate for the past six years at ISKL.
I also joined French cooking class, where you get to cook French food. I started this year, and it is very fun. Through the cooking class, I was surprised to learn how much cheese is used in French cuisine.
Can you tell us more about your other hobbies and interests?
Through ASA’s karate classes, I became more interested in learning about karate, so I also practice it outside of school. I enjoy training in attacks and defenses using sticks.
Additionally, I have become interested in sewing. I made a wallet for myself and will try to make another one for my best friend!
Which of these Panther superlatives best describes you? Which Panther are you?
🐾 The Most Baik Panther – (Baik means kindhearted)
Share why you chose this superlative and how it shows your Panther spirit!
I’m the Most Baik Panther because I help new people and those who don't know where to go. I also help people when in Japan, such as the elderly, when they cross the road.
Tell us why ISKL is special to you?
I Suka (Like) ISKL because I have been in ISKL for eight years, and I have some teachers who have been here since I was in Grade 1. They have been encouraging me to challenge new things.
What does ISKL’s vision, “Know yourself, care for all and create a better world,” mean to you?
It makes me feel like everyone in the class, and even the entire school, depends on it, and everyone is friendly to one another.
Do you know of any student, teacher, parent, or staff member who always have an anecdote to tell, love to share some insights into their passions and interest, or simply is a Panther through and through?
