Panthers of ISKL #299: Yun Zhe C. (‘31) - The Mathematician

Elementary students swimming competition

Mathematics is beyond numbers; it’s a form of science found in many aspects of our lives, and it can also be a form of art when I can integrate the formulas or theorems learnt and come up with creative solutions in problem-solving. The precision in numbers and the flexibility in its applications are what I enjoy the most.

Meet Yun Zhe C. (‘31), a Middle School student who joined ISKL in Grade 3 in 2021. Coming from a family of six and with a passion for mathematics, he's a true example of the school's Panther spirit.

From winning international math competitions to embracing challenges like abseiling, Yun Zhe embodies the 'Most Onz Panther' spirit, showing that with the right platform, anything is possible.

Here is Yun’s story:

Can you tell us more about yourself? What grade did you join ISKL in?

My name is Yun Zhe.  I was born and raised in Malaysia and spent 4 years in a British syllabus international school before moving to ISKL in 2021 to join Grade 3.

I come from a family of six, consisting of my parents and three adorable younger sisters.

You’ve developed a reputation for your skills in mathematics. What do you enjoy most about working with numbers, and can you share a moment when your math skills helped you solve a challenging problem or achieve something you’re proud of?

Mathematics is beyond numbers; it is a form of science found in many aspects of our lives, and it can also be a form of art when I can integrate the formulas or theorems learnt and come up with creative solutions in problem-solving.  The precision in numbers and the flexibility in its applications are what I enjoy the most.

I have taken part in many maths competitions over the last few years, and my best achievement was the perfect score and overall Champion in the Singapore Mathematics Global Finals earlier this year.  I felt really proud and high-spirited when the Jalur Gemilang (the Malaysian flag) was featured along with the results announced.

The 2 people who have supported me throughout my entire math journey are my parents, because they have given me their time and resources to guide me along.  They have also instilled the discipline in me to become a better learner and keep improving myself to be the best version of me.

Describe your most memorable moment at ISKL

My most memorable moments from ISKL were Malaysia Week in Langkawi. For the first time, I was away from my family for a whole week and stayed in the wild with my teammates.  Throughout the 5-day activities, I learned to get along with people, helping and supporting each other as a team, taking on challenges that I never thought I could do, like abseiling and Skytrex.

Which Panther are you?

🐾 The Most Onz Panther – (Onz means nothing is impossible)

Share why you chose this superlative and how it shows your Panther spirit!

I’m the Most Onz Panther because I have achieved many “first-times” in school last year – I sang solo in the “Pop with Purpose” concert to raise funds for the Chin Women refugees community.  My egg fried rice, which I cooked with my partner, Li Heng, was the most popular dish at the lunch hosted by our school for the refugee children.  My Grade 6 team was the champion in one of the HighFour Math Competitions last year, competing against other middle-schoolers, including Grade 8 students.

I am the Most Onz panther because ISKL has provided me with the right platform to explore and experience all these. I think everyone can be the Most Onz Panther by embracing the opportunities given to us.

I Suka (Like) ISKL because ISKL is not just a school for academics, it is a place to prep us for the world and learn to live as a diverse community.

What does ISKL’s vision, “Know yourself, care for all and create a better world,” mean to you?

ISKL’s vision statement means we must know ourselves - the values, culture, and beliefs that define us, embrace others who are different from us, and take on our role to build a better world.
