Panthers of ISKL #297: Jin Wen Phung - The Supportive Panther

I want people to feel they can face challenges on their own, knowing support is always there. That’s the kind of impact I hope to leave: not just fixing things, but helping others feel like they’ve got this.
Meet Jin Wen Phung, ISKL’s Data and Analytics Specialist from Kuching, Sarawak, who has built a diverse career driven by a passion for problem-solving.
Since joining in 2018, she has been a connector, linking systems and people to build efficient and impactful processes, culminating in a recent focus on successfully integrating AI into workflows to drive innovation.
Here is Jin’s story:
Can you tell us more about yourself?
I'm originally from Kuching, Sarawak—the land of amazing food and rainforests!
Before joining ISKL, I’ve worn quite a few hats (sometimes all at once). I’ve never been afraid to try something totally new — that’s kind of my thing. I’ve taken on roles in graphic and web design, worked with a tour company, spent time at a tech networking firm, been part of the F&B industry, and stayed actively involved in sports along the way.
I enjoy learning, problem-solving, and figuring things out as I go. The more unexpected the path, the more I seem to grow.
When and why did you join ISKL?
I joined ISKL when the new campus opened in August 2018 — though to be honest, it felt more like the place chose me. My first day of work was literally the first day school opened. From the start, it felt like a place where I could grow, contribute, and do meaningful work with people who care. Looking back, I’m really glad I said yes.
We've heard you're a bit of a 'wizard' when it comes to tech. Can you describe what a typical day looks like for you as a Data and Analytics Specialist and the kind of projects you work on?
No two days are the same! Most people assume I spend all day building dashboards (and, yes, that does happen), but the real work is behind the scenes — figuring out where in the process a small change could have a big impact.
What I really do is connect the dots — across systems, processes, and people. And one thing I’ve learned: change the process, and you change the data. Change the data, and you start to shift the whole picture.
Can you tell us about anything exciting or interesting happening at ISKL that you’re a part of?
Right now, I’m focusing on integrating AI into our workflows in a way that can take all of us to a new level. I’ve seen — and been part of — processes that used to take up entire weeks just to get through routine tasks.
With the right AI tools, that same workload can be reduced to just a few hours. I mean — who wouldn’t want to turn a week of manual effort into something you can wrap up before lunch? Let AI handle the repetitive, time-consuming stuff — so we can focus on the part that really needs us: the human insight, the creativity, and the value only people can bring.
To me, it’s not about being the first school to try AI — it’s about doing it right, and doing it well, across the board. And of course, it goes way beyond just ChatGPT.
Can you tell us more about your hobbies and interests? What do you do after work?
After work, I focus on recharging — whether that’s a bit of yoga, a good massage, some nice food, or just putting on a show to unwind. But what really keeps me going is surrounding myself with good people and good conversations. Whether it’s a quick catch-up or a deep conversation, those moments matter. Life’s too short not to have friends you can laugh with, reflect with, or just sit in silence with after a long day.
Sometimes, it’s also just me and Netflix — we understand each other.
What is your most memorable moment so far at ISKL?
One of my most memorable moments at ISKL was when a colleague said, “Thanks for teaching me — I did it on my own, and it actually worked!” That really stuck with me. I realized that it wasn’t just about solving a tech issue — it was about building confidence. I want people to feel they can face challenges on their own, knowing support is always there. That’s the kind of impact I hope to leave: not just fixing things, but helping others feel like they’ve got this.
Who or what inspires you?
The everyday Malaysian inspires me — the ones who keep going, stay kind, and find a way no matter what’s thrown at them. It reminds me that you don’t need a big title to make an impact — just consistency, heart, and a bit of grit.
And when I think about the people who’ve come and gone in my life, they’ve each inspired me in different ways — and many still do. Whether they stayed for a moment or a season, their stories, struggles, and strength stayed with me and shaped me into a better person.
Which Panther are you?
🐾 The Most Onz Panther – (Onz means nothing is impossible)
Share why you chose this superlative and how it shows your Panther spirit!
I’m The Most Onz Panther because I’m always ready to jump in, figure things out, and make things happen, even if it’s completely new territory. I love messiness. It means there’s something to explore, improve, or create — and that’s where I thrive. If something needs to be done, I’ll find a way — or build one.
Tell us why ISKL is special to you:
I Suka (Like) ISKL because it’s given me the opportunities and support to grow, and at the same time, it’s always pushed me to do more. It’s an environment that fuels my curiosity — where I’m encouraged to explore ideas, ask questions, and try new things. Having that space to be curious, supported, and challenged is something I really value.
What does ISKL’s vision, “Know yourself, care for all and create a better world,” mean to you?
“Know yourself, care for all, and create a better world” is a reminder to stay honest with who I am, show up for others, and leave things better than I found them.
It reminds me that impact doesn’t always have to be big or loud — sometimes it’s in the small, consistent actions. If I can keep learning about myself, support the people around me, and use what I know to make things a little better each day, then I’m on the right track.
