Panthers of ISKL #282: Ika T. (‘26) - The SSST Linguist
"Studying Arabic, especially as a School-Supported Self-Taught (SSST) subject, has helped me improve a lot. I've learnt to manage my time better and to take responsibility for my learning.”
Since joining ISKL in Grade 11, Ika T. (‘26) has embraced new opportunities while staying connected to her cultural roots. Born in Egypt and raised across Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and now Malaysia, she values the diversity and support found at ISKL.
Through the IB’s School-Supported Self-Taught Arabic course, Ika has deepened her understanding of her heritage while developing skills like time management and independent learning. In this blog she shares how ISKL’s caring community and learning spaces have helped her grow academically and personally.
Here is Ika’s story:
Can you tell us more about yourself?
I am in Grade 11, and I'm 16 years old. I was born in Egypt but spent most of my childhood in Saudi Arabia before moving to Malaysia from the UAE. I am the firstborn daughter in a family of seven, with four younger siblings, two of whom are also students at ISKL.
Which grade did you join ISKL? What were your first days like?
I joined ISKL this year, and my first days at school were full of great people. I felt really enthusiastic about joining a new school, and everyone around the school was very friendly and supportive. I was also comforted by the support of my teachers and counselors.
The campus is huge, with many great facilities, and I was very excited about that.
How has studying Arabic in the IB program enriched your learning experience?
Studying Arabic, especially as a School-Supported Self-Taught (SSST) subject, has helped me improve a lot. I've learnt to manage my time better and to take responsibility for my learning.
The school is also very supportive. Studying in quiet places like the SSST class, the MS/HS library, and the different study spaces around the school makes it easier. Ms Chika is also very supportive, always answering all my enquiries regarding the syllabus, making my learning experience much easier.
How has deepening your understanding of Arabic helped you connect with your cultural heritage?
I have come to understand more about issues from that particular area, the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), so I can understand more and engage in more conversations. This class has also given me the opportunity to read and delve more into my culture and my history, which has helped me feel more connected to my family and my origins.
What advice would you give other native speakers considering studying their own language within the IB curriculum?
Time management is key. For this class, it was very helpful to track all my tasks and have a clear outline of my goals. This was done with the help of Ms. Chika, and it allowed me not to stress about this class and actually enjoy what I'm learning without pressure. Knowing your resources is very important, and this class definitely will not be hard if you truly understand what you're doing and manage it well.
What are your plans after you graduate from ISKL?
My plans for the future are still unclear to me. I would like to pursue a major related to the medical field, but I also love Arabic literature. I plan to pursue what I love at the time, what makes me feel most at home, and where I can truly embrace myself.
Can you tell us more about your other hobbies and interests?
I am very passionate about Arabic literature and poetry. I also love reading in different fields, such as true crime, psychology, and history. I enjoy embroidery, cooking, and any sort of art. Most of my hobbies and interests revolve around things I can do to make people around me happy, whether as a satisfying meal or a thoughtful gift.
Do you have any thoughts on your career pathway?
I have always been interested in pursuing medical school. I want to help people around me and be helpful to my community. Over the last few years, I have also grown interested in pharmacy and psychology. These fields are all I would be satisfied with, and they will provide me with a career where I can proudly help people around me.
Who or what inspires you or has influenced you?
Someone who truly inspires me is my grandfather. He is an Engineering Professor at a prestigious university in Egypt. However, what I admire most about him is not his accomplishments or his contributions to his community. I admire his ethics and morals; I admire that everyone loves and respects him for his character. He has taught me a lot, including forgiveness, containing anger, respect, and being virtuous. His influence has made me into the person I am today, and has allowed me to treat people with love and respect.
Most memorable moment at ISKL?
Season 2 of IASAS basketball was a truly memorable experience. It was admirable that I could support my school, friends, and community by coming together to show our support.
What does "Know yourself, care for all, and create a better world" mean to you?
This quote means that to contribute to your community and love and care for those around you, you need to love, care for, and understand yourself first. It all starts from within you.
