Panthers of ISKL #280: Dev C. (‘25) - The Mentoring Panther

Panthers of ISKL Dev C

"ISKL has a very supportive community. This is important because it creates a mutually rewarding environment. Those who give grow as leaders, and those who receive gain guidance that builds confidence.”

Meet Dev C. ('25), a globally-minded Grade 12 student who joined ISKL in Grade 7 and found a supportive community to explore his passions.

From leading the HS Advanced Computer Science (HACS) club to launching MentoMenti.com, Dev has combined his love for coding and mentorship to connect students and create a meaningful impact.

Here is Dev’s story:

Can you tell us more about yourself?

My family is from India, though I am American by nationality. Before KL, I lived in San Diego, Lagos, Mumbai, and Singapore.

Which grade did you join ISKL? What were your first days like?

I joined in Grade 7. They were exciting! The campus was very new, so it was nice to be in a modern learning environment–a change from the older campus of my previous school.

You've been a key student leader at ISKL. Can you share what inspired you to take on a leadership role in HS Advanced Computer Science (HACS) and how you've seen the club evolve under your guidance?

I first led the HACS club in Grade 10. I have been interested in programming since Middle School. My older brother is a software engineer and was a big inspiration for me in programming. He introduced me to web development, which broadly fueled my passion. Our club has introduced students to programming through web development.

Over the years, I've seen members develop a genuine passion for programming that aligns with their personal goals and interests. From personal websites to larger-scale web apps (Singsong, iykyk), inspiring and guiding members in software development has been rewarding.

Dev having a discussion

Mentomenti is such a unique initiative! For those who don't know what that is, what motivated you to create a peer-to-peer mentoring platform, and what impact has it had on students so far?

Thanks! MentoMenti.com is a peer-to-peer mentoring platform where students can connect with mentors across various academic subjects and interests for personalized guidance and support. For instance, if someone is eager to get into web development, they can be matched with a mentor who's been through the journey, offering not just technical support but the kind of relatable, experience-based insight that traditional systems often overlook. It's been rewarding to develop the platform and see students in our school community, otherwise unknown to each other, forming valuable knowledge-sharing relationships—from chemistry, math, and even golf.

I HIGHLY encourage High School students to SIGN UP! Whether as a mentor or mentee. Once my exams are over, I will continue building, adapting, and expanding the platform to meet the mentorship needs of our community (and broader ones)!

Mentorship is a strong theme in your journey. Why do you think peer support is important in a school like ISKL?

ISKL has a very supportive community. This is important because it creates a mutually rewarding environment. Those who give grow as leaders, and those who receive gain guidance that builds confidence.

Any advice for younger Panthers who want to make a difference but aren't sure where to start?

Just take a risk. You won't know unless you try.

What are your plans after you graduate from ISKL? Do you have any thoughts on your career pathway?

I'm attending the University of Michigan in the fall (Go BLUE!). I want to study artificial intelligence (AI), which fascinates me. Maybe I can pursue a start-up. Let's see.

Can you tell us more about your other hobbies and interests?

I love playing and watching golf, basketball (Lakers in 5), going to the gym, and hanging out with friends and family.

Who or what inspires you or has influenced you?

Not in any order: Lebron James, my parents, my grandparents, my great-grandparents, Kobe Bryant, my brother, Benjamin Franklin, Rory McIlroy, Steve Jobs.

Most memorable moment at ISKL?

It was probably most memorable because it was recent, but it was our last day of school. It felt quite surreal, and it was a heck of a fun day!
