Panthers of ISKL #266: Laurie Larsen - The Perceptive Panther
I will most definitely miss the wonderful students at ISKL. I love that our students come from many different countries and cultures. I learn so much daily, giving me new perspectives on the world and the subjects I teach.
After an incredible journey spanning multiple countries and over a decade at ISKL, MS Math and Science Teacher Laurie Larsen is preparing for her next adventure back home in Nebraska.
Her passion for education, exploration, and making a difference has shaped the lives of countless students. As she reflects on her time at ISKL, she shares her experiences, inspirations, and invaluable advice for the next generation of educators, preparing them for the challenges and joys of their roles.
Here is Laurie’s story:
Please tell us more about yourself.
I was born in a small town (150 people) called Cordova, Nebraska, in the USA. Before moving to Malaysia, I lived and taught in Guam, Thailand, Brazil, and Mexico.
When and why did you join ISKL?
I joined ISKL in 2010. I had been living in the Americas and was excited to return to Southeast Asia, having previously lived in Thailand.
ISKL has a great reputation as a school, so it was at the top of my list of places in Southeast Asia to teach. I was so excited to move to ISKL. Of all the IASAS schools, this was the best school for me.
What is your best memory (or most memorable moment) so far working at ISKL?
There are too many memories to choose from! My best memories are always in my classroom when students have a moment of clarity and understanding when they have been struggling with the class work.
Also, I will never forget the amazing experiences of Malaysia Week. Seeing students outside the classroom in a different kind of “classroom” environment can bring a whole new appreciation for them.
What will you miss most about ISKL?
I will most definitely miss the wonderful students at ISKL. I love that our students come from many different countries and cultures. I learn so much daily, giving me new perspectives on the world and the subjects I teach.
Can you share a saying or idea you learned or experienced at ISKL that you will always carry?
Know yourself, care for all, and create a better world. Our vision is a good way to approach life; I appreciate that about our school. The thoughts and efforts are not just about creating successful students. The reason for being here is to help form successful, productive, and inclusive global citizens.
Do you have any advice to offer for new faculty members who are joining the community?
Embrace all of the perspectives that each student, parent, and employee brings with them. There is much to learn when we seek to understand people with different backgrounds.
What are your plans once you leave ISKL?
When I leave ISKL, I will be heading back home to Nebraska to be near my family. I will be teaching there and also be able to be involved in the lives of my many nieces and nephews.
Can you tell us more about your hobbies and interests? What do you do after work?
I love SCUBA diving and photography and combine the two whenever possible. I have learned so much about the coral reef ecosystem by looking so carefully at it through a lens. There are so many fascinating creatures in our oceans!
Who or what inspires you?
I recently had the opportunity to hear Jane Goodall speak for the third time since coming to Malaysia. She creates such a powerful want to contribute when she speaks. Her recent speech has inspired me to consider what I can do to promote science and opportunities to make an environmental impact when I move back to the United States.
What does “Know yourself, care for all, and create a better world” mean to you?
As I previously mentioned, I think this is a great way to look at life. Know your needs, goals, limitations, and expectations to be clear on the path you want to take. Care for all around you, as we are all part of an interconnected community that depends on each other. The happiness and health of each person determine the happiness and health of the whole community. Create a better world to leave this place an improved version for the future.
