Panthers of ISKL #247: William O.(‘28) – The Altruistic Panther

“Teaching my classmates is something I truly enjoy, not only because it gives me a sense of proud accomplishment but also because it is a win-win situation for both of us. As I help others improve in areas they may be struggling with, I reinforce my understanding of the topic, strengthening our understanding of it from different starting points. ”

Meet William O. (’28), a South Korean student whose journey began with a bold aspiration: to immerse in a multicultural environment, embrace diversity, and prepare for a global future.

From navigating a new campus to finding joy in helping classmates succeed, we delve into his inspiring academic and personal growth journey, fueled by a passion for learning, a love for music, and dreams of shaping the world through law and diplomacy.

Here is William’s story:

Can you tell us more about yourself? Which grade did you join ISKL?

I am from South Korea and have lived in Malaysia for five years. I came to Malaysia with the sole purpose of studying with people from different nationalities, races, etc., and with the end goal of studying internationally for college.

Beginning my journey of studying abroad in another international school in KL, I transferred to ISKL in 2021 with an ambition to collaborate in a bigger pond, which has been shown to be true.

What were your first days of school like?

The first day of the school was very confusing. I did not know a single person in the school or where I was – I still get lost! The campus was bigger than seen in the photos, and the community was far bigger than my old school, which gave me a bomb of confusion. However, throughout the school year, I slowly fitted myself into the new community with the help of an encouraging environment.

We understand that you are helping your classmates by offering them free tuition and assistance. Please tell us more about that.

Teaching my classmates (ie, giving them free tuition) is something I truly enjoy, not only because it gives me a sense of proud accomplishment but also because it is a win-win situation for us. As I help others improve in areas they may be struggling with, I reinforce my understanding of the topic, strengthening our understanding of it from different starting points.

I also believe that everyone in a community should succeed regardless of what it takes. Free tuition is a way to contribute to a supportive learning environment, helping everyone grow and succeed together.

Can you tell us more about your other hobbies and interests?

I am known to have a very boring hobby: reading news articles, researching, and watching parliamentary conferences. For me, watching someone or a group of people debate is entertainment and reading what other people have in mind about an issue.

I also enjoy practicing the violin, but my hobbies include reading and watching debates and speeches.

What are your hopes and dreams for the future?

I want to study law and political science to understand better the legal frameworks and political systems that shape global affairs.

After completing my education, I aim to work with the United Nations, where I can contribute to international diplomacy and policymaking. My ultimate goal is to become a politician, where I can use my knowledge and experience to create positive change in my country and the world.

Who or what inspires you or has influenced you?

While acknowledging my mother, I realize that my father has been the most influential person in my life, not just through his words but also by how he lives. He taught me that pursuing happiness is not only a personal journey but a reflection of being human and the beauty of it. Through him, I have learned that happiness is not about material success or fleeting moments of joy but is about finding purpose and nurturing relationships.

Besides him, I would say Beethoven. He influenced me through music; his music intertwined with my life and the emotions I felt. His music not only speaks to the intellect but also touches the heart, offering a form of emotional release and empathy. Through his symphonies, Beethoven has become more than a historical figure for me—he is an emotional guide, reflecting and enhancing my personal experiences with his timeless artistry.

Most memorable moment at ISKL?

The most memorable moment in ISKL was when I went to the AMIS Honor Orchestra in Korea – I was very fortunate to have that opportunity. Not only did ISKL offer me an opportunity for educational achievement, but they also supported my pursuit of music.

This moment stands out as the most unforgettable because it was the first time in Middle School that I had a clear, burning goal in front of me: to be accepted for the AMIS audition. I pushed myself harder than ever, determined to make it happen, no matter the obstacles. For three intense months, I practiced relentlessly, pouring every ounce of effort into perfecting my performance. When Mr. Cee finally said, “You’re in,” time stopped. The overwhelming rush of accomplishment flooded through me—something beyond words. That feeling is still etched in my memory, marking my most memorable moment at ISKL.

What does “Know yourself, care for all, and create a better world” “mean to you?

Knowing yourself, caring for all, and creating a better world represents a powerful framework for personal growth and social responsibility. By knowing yourself, you gain clarity about your values and the purpose of your existence. When you extend that understanding to others, you foster empathy and compassion. Together, these principles empower you to take meaningful actions to create a better world.
