Panthers of ISKL #237: Zavier M.(‘28) - The Team Player

Panthers of ISKL Zavier M

"Everything about sports is really important to me. Basketball is so exciting and thrilling to play. Football, although you score so much less, is still very exciting. Being part of a team and learning life lessons together is fun.”

Meet Zavier M. ('28), a High School student from Canada who has been part of the community since Grade 3. He is passionate about basketball and football, as well as film and photography.

Here is Zavier’s story:

Can you tell us more about yourself?

I am from Alberta, Canada, and before ISKL, I was in the Shanghai American School. I joined ISKL in Grade 3 and have lived in Malaysia for seven years.

What were your first days of school like?

It was awkward from the beginning, but the school was very inclusive, and I made friends quickly.

We understand that you enjoy basketball and football. Please tell us more.

I mean, everything about sports is really important to me. Basketball is so exciting and thrilling to play. Football, although you score so much less, is still very exciting. Being part of a team and learning life lessons together is so fun.

Do you participate in any co-curricular activities at ISKL?

No, I don't. However, I have Chinese tuition because my family and I greatly value a second language.

Can you tell us more about your hobbies and interests?

Recently, I have become very interested in film and photography and have loved the idea of history. I have been thrown into a deep rabbit hole. I also love hanging out with my friends and playing sports with them.

What are your hopes and dreams for the future?

Growing up in Malaysia, one of my favorite trips was to Bali and Lombok. When I grow up, I cannot wait to go to Bali and Lombok, surf, relax, bring my friends, and enjoy the planet and the freedom.

Who or what inspires you or has influenced you?

I once watched a YouTube video in which a man created an entire ecosystem in his house, which got me interested in biology. Also, Mr. Nichols, my English teacher, has influenced me a lot.

Most memorable moment at ISKL?

There are too many to choose from; I have 1000 amazing memories here that I will never forget.

What does "Know yourself, care for all, and create a better world" "mean to you?

Knowing yourself should mean doing what you want to do, doing what makes you happy, and being who you are. Caring for all doesn't just mean being kind; it also means caring for the environment and doing what is right. And that also applies to creating a better world.
