Panthers of ISKL #235: Amirthen S.(‘28) – The Chess Player
“I have played chess for almost nine years and am a national player representing Malaysia twice. Last year, I placed fourth in the nationals. ”
Meet Amirthen S. (’28), a Grade 9 student from Malaysia who just joined ISKL as a Pathways Scholar. Amirthen is a national chess player who has represented Malaysia twice, achieving a remarkable fourth place last year. His dedication and success in chess are truly inspiring. He is also a Cross-Country team member, participating in the IASAS Season 1 in Taipei in October 2024!
Here is Amirthen’s story:
Can you tell us more about yourself?
I’m from Malaysia and have lived here for my entire life. I live in a family of five with an older brother who is 19 and a younger sister who is 14. I’m 16 years old and a new student in Grade 9.
What encouraged you to join ISKL as a Pathways scholar? What advice would you give someone thinking about applying for the scholarship?
I found out about the Pathway Scholarship when I was 14 and was keen to apply. However, I wasn’t old enough to apply, so I waited a year and learned more about the school’s curriculum. Finally, when I was eligible, I applied and thankfully got the scholarship!
To the new scholarship applicants doing their best to be future Panthers, I would advise them to focus more on their characteristics and self-improvement. Academics and extracurricular activities are important, too, but these grades don’t define who you are as an individual. So, focus more on your skills and characteristics.
How has the transition to ISKL been for you?
To be honest, it has been pretty smooth. My peers in ISKL are great, and my PRAXIS cohort is wonderful. We recently had a field trip, and it was one of the best experiences of my life.
We understand you are a chess player who has participated in several tournaments. You also have a passion for math and cross country. Please share more about these interests.
I have played chess for almost nine years and am a national chess player representing Malaysia twice. Last year, I placed fourth in the nationals.
I also do many other sports, such as cross country, which I love so much because running is all about pushing yourself and getting out of your comfort zone.
Do you participate in any co-curricular activities at ISKL?
I’m currently on the Cross-Country team and have joined the Chess Club. I’m also attending the IASAS Exchange in Bangkok this year, and I look forward to it.
With this in mind, what are your thoughts on your career pathway?
I have yet to choose a specific career path, as career paths are always changing for most of us. However, I’m interested in Economics and Accountancy. I won’t be surprised if it changes after graduating High School.
Who or what inspires and influences you?
My inspiration has always been Tony Fernandes, the founder and CEO of Air Asia. He is my inspiration not only because he is a successful entrepreneur but also because he achieved all three of his childhood dreams: owning an airline company, a football club, and a Formula 1 racing team. He is living proof that we can achieve anything if we put our minds to it.
What is your most memorable moment at ISKL so far?
My most memorable moment in ISKL was during the PRAXIS field trip when we all ate dinner together after finishing our project and team-building activities.
What does the ISKL vision: know yourself, care for all, and create a better world mean to you?
It is one of the reasons I love ISKL so much. The school is dedicated to ensuring that the students reach their full potential and grow with not only good IQ but better emotional intelligence.
