“ISKL has exceeded my expectations, making me feel welcomed and connected from the start. This is so important when you’re new to a country, missing your previous home and dear friends, and asking yourself if you made the right choice deep down in your heart.”
Heidi E., an ISKL parent with Italian and German heritage, has been in the ISKL community since January 2023. Heidi is a mom to two kids in ES and MS and, in her free time, volunteers at various school activities. She has acted as a representative in Elementary School and is currently a Grade Level Coordinator (GLC) in Middle School.
Here is Heidi’s story:
Can you tell us more about yourself?
I was born in Northern Italy, in the small seaside town of Trieste, and have German roots. I’m a mix of German efficiency and Italian flair, so I’m well-organized and precise, but I also know how to enjoy a leisurely coffee or a last-minute meal with friends!
I love being around people. I’m a firm believer in the power of positive thinking and its impact on our experiences. Good company and uplifting conversations make life enjoyable and help me through the challenges of expat life.
I love traveling and discovering new places and people. From bustling cities to breathtaking nature, I’m always ready for the next adventure! I believe that the best stories are found between the pages of a passport. I love cooking, especially baking cakes! There’s always room for one more at our table, and no one leaves without a slice (or two) of something delicious! I also love furniture and art! Every piece at our home tells a story and brings back lovely memories. Unfortunately, I haven’t quite mastered the “less is more” concept yet, but I’m working on it!
After an eclectic career in the fashion industry, I shifted my focus to family life and supporting my husband’s career. Our journey has taken us across several European countries, the last ten years in Munich, Germany, and now to Malaysia, opening up a new chapter of adventure and discovery.
What year did your family join the ISKL community? What made you choose ISKL?
We joined ISKL in January 2023. Choosing a school can be complex, but friends in KL enthusiastically recommended ISKL. When we visited the campus, having come from cold Germany, we loved the expansive facilities and the large portion of the campus outdoors, surrounded by lush plants and greenery. There are plenty of corners with vegetation and areas that feel like you’re stepping into a little jungle where happy faces meet and play.
The location, the school’s values, the international IB program, and the warm, super diverse, and multicultural sense of community convinced us right away that ISKL was the perfect fit for our family.
How has your experience as a parent at ISKL been?
ISKL has exceeded my expectations, making me feel welcomed and connected from the start. This is so important when you’re new to a country, missing your previous home and dear friends, and asking yourself if you made the right choice deep down in your heart.
Can you describe the ways you are involved within the ISKL community?
Yes! I help out with the PTA and it’s been a great experience. I started slowly at first, attending meetings and getting a feel for how things worked. Very quickly, though, I became more involved as I got to know more people who are now lovely friends. Now, I help with events, volunteer at school activities, and as a representative in Elementary School and a Grade Level Coordinator (GLC) in Middle School. Seeing how all the volunteers make a difference in the school community is lovely, and my involvement with the PTA has deepened my connection to the school and given me a better understanding of the ISKL community.
Can you offer any advice for new ISKL parents?
Keep a positive attitude; adjusting to a new school takes time, but you’ll find your groove soon enough. The school shares a lot of information at first, which can be overwhelming, but you’ll get used to it in no time.
Get involved by attending events and meetings. Connecting with other parents at ISKL can be super helpful, whether for tips, advice, or a friendly chat.
Ask questions whenever needed; someone is always there to help. Chat with your children’s teachers early on to build a good relationship – this can help you understand how your child is doing. Also, remember to enjoy Kuala Lumpur! It’s a vibrant city with lots to offer, so take some time to explore and feel more at home.
Describe your most memorable moments at ISKL.
Such little time and so many memorable moments!
Orlando’s first school concert with the orchestra was a heartwarming experience. Watching the kids on stage, especially seeing how confident and excited they were, was especially rewarding. The HS Shrek musical was like being on Broadway! Our first International Festival was like a world tour in a day! The whole place was buzzing with different cultures, food, and traditions from all over. Impressive.
I am looking forward to creating many more memorable moments!
What do you love most about ISKL?
The strong sense of community and friendships with other families have made us feel right at home and less homesick.
The mix of academics and extracurriculars is so well organized. Thanks to the after-school programs, my kids have had the chance to try a variety of sports, activities, and clubs that are not easily found in Europe.
Who knows how far Amanda will go with fencing, thanks to ISKL!
Who or what inspires you?
All the people who quietly work behind the scenes at ISKL do so without seeking attention or praise but rather for the reward of seeing the school succeed and thrive.
Their quiet dedication keeps things running smoothly and creates an amazing student and staff environment. Whether organizing events, supporting teachers, or helping with daily tasks, their hard work often goes unseen but never unappreciated.
They are a crucial part of what makes ISKL the special place it is, and their contributions impact the school’s success. Their dedication inspires me every day.
What does ISKL’s vision, “Know yourself, care for all and create a better world,” mean to you?
For me, it’s about raising self-aware and socially responsible individuals ready to use their talents to make a difference.
