Panthers of ISKL Taeung

“Malaysia Week and sports trips are the most memorable moments for me at ISKL. I can’t just pick one since they all remain memorable for me, such as trips to Endau Rompin, Perhentian, Phuket, and Jakarta. ”

Meet Taeung Y. (’28), a Grade 9 student from Korea. He avidly loves sports and has joined teams in football, basketball, volleyball, badminton, rugby, and track and field since being at ISKL. He has also participated in school plays, orchestra, a jazz band, and plays the trombone.

Here is Taeung’s story:

POISKL TaeungCan you tell us more about yourself?

I was born in Suwon, South Korea, and lived there until I was five when I moved to Thailand. I enrolled in ISE, an international school in Thailand, until Grade 3. Then, I returned to Korea and graduated from a public primary school. I moved to Kuala Lumpur and am currently studying here at ISKL.

What were your first days of school like?

When I first joined ISKL, I took online classes for about two months, which I found pretty interesting. It was new, and I tried out some different activities online. I managed to make friends online, and when I went to school, I spotted a group of friends playing football and made friends with them.

We understand you participate in sports, music, and drama activities. Please describe them and what you like about them.

I participated in different sports teams—some new and familiar —such as football, basketball, volleyball, badminton, rugby, and track and field—and made the traveling teams for all of them. I also participated in school plays in Grades 7 and 8, like Annie Jr. and The Weight of Our Sky, which were new to me. Lastly, I was in two orchestras and one jazz band throughout Middle School, playing the trombone, an instrument I started when I joined ISKL.

Can you tell us more about your other hobbies and interests?

Sports are definitely my favorite hobby so far because they show my strengths, and I find them enjoyable. I also enjoy drawing, but I could improve on it.

What are your hopes and dreams for the future?

I do not have any specific plans for the future, but I want to be happy, smart, and cool.

Who or what inspires you or has influenced you?

My brother has inspired me a lot since he gave me life lessons, and I can ask for advice. However, my peers are the ones that usually motivate me in any aspect because they are the ones that I compete with.

Most memorable moment at ISKL?

Malaysia Week and sports trips are definitely the most memorable moments for me at ISKL. I can’t just pick one since they all remain memorable for me, such as trips to Endau Rompin, Perhentian, Phuket, and Jakarta.

What does “Know yourself, care for all, and create a better world” “mean to you?

It means that you should know yourself before caring for others; therefore, you could create a better world.
