Malaysia Week 2026: Challenges, Connections, and Growth

ISKL International Fest blog thumb

Malaysia Week is a long-standing ISKL tradition that takes Middle School students beyond the classroom and into the diverse landscapes, cultures, and communities of Malaysia. In April 2026, over 460 students followed in the footsteps of the many thousands who have participated in the program since it began in 1979. Across 22 different locations, from coral reefs and island shores to river valleys, mountain trails, heritage streets, and fishing villages, students embarked on journeys designed to challenge, inspire, and connect.

Through adventure, exploration, and shared experiences, Malaysia Week provides a unique opportunity for students to learn beyond the classroom. While every pathway is different, the program's learning goals remain the same:

  • Learn a new skill or gain knowledge in an area not ordinarily found in the school curriculum
  • Reinforce skills and content in the existing curriculum
  • Increase knowledge, understanding, enjoyment, and appreciation of Malaysia
  • Learn to cooperate in a group situation with peers as well as adults
  • Gain an increased sense of independence and responsibility
  • Experience the positive aspects of living in a community

Malaysia Week is designed to help students step outside their comfort zones, persevere through difficult moments, and build confidence in their own abilities. The program's mixed-grade groups also foster meaningful connections across grade levels, creating opportunities to expand friendship circles and build new relationships. Along the way, students develop a deeper appreciation for Malaysia's natural environment and discover the value of resilience, teamwork, and an open mindset.

We hope you enjoy reading our students' reflections from this year's Malaysia Week and discovering the challenges they embraced, the friendships they built, and the lessons and memories they will carry with them.

Stepping Outside Comfort Zones

“One thing that really made me push myself during Malaysia Week was I have a fear of heights, so when I arrived at the "Mountain school" and saw the ropes suspended in mid-air, I hesitated, unsure whether to try. I asked my friends for advice and remembered what my parents had said: "Do anything you think is impossible. Even if you fail after trying, at least you won't regret it." I told myself that I didn't want to have any regrets during Malaysia Week, so I finally challenged the aerial ropes and succeeded.”

“My most memorable moment from this week in Malaysia has to be when we went jetty jumping from the deck to a small island after kayaking from one place to another. I was terrified—shivering from the cold and feeling all itchy from the salty sea. But I pushed through, giving it my all, standing on the edge, ready for whatever would come next. I faced the ocean, took a deep breath, and jumped with my eyes closed. It took a while to finally take that leap into the cold water. But in that moment, I felt like I had conquered one of my biggest fears!”

“I got pushed outside my comfort zone when we went on the hike. It was really hard, and I fell a couple of times. But, I was most surprised that I didn't give up. I'd say the most significant moment was when I finished the hike because it was really fun, and although I had some hard times, I overcame them.”

Perseverance and Resilience

“When we had to go white water rafting, after some point, it got more difficult to paddle the boat, but I kept on going until I was able to do it!”

“One thing that really made me push myself during Malaysia Week was kayaking. My arms were hurting so much but Zayda was with me and helped me stay positive. After I felt like I accomplished a lot and I felt good, I learned that even when something is hard, but when you overcome it you feel good.”

Confidence and Self-Discovery

“The thing that surprised me the most about myself is the confidence I had. This is because during our talent show we needed an MC and at first I volunteered with my friend but then we both got too scared. Since no one wanted to MC, they encouraged me again which pushed me to do it. Although it was scary, it was also really fun.”

“Something that made me really push through was being away from my parents for 4- 5 days because I am not really used to being that far from my parents with the school field trips. But I liked it because it made me be more responsible with everything and it helped me make better decisions.”

“During Malaysia Week, I usually took on the role of leader, which is sometimes unusual for me because I usually follow what to do, but also give my ideas and collaborate. Like listening to other people but also sharing my own ideas. During the certification dives, I had issues with equalizing. I took advice from others, and during these dives, I managed very well. The last dive was challenging, with low visibility and a mild current. That dive was very special for me, as it showed me what a real diver can accomplish.”

Friendship and Community

“One thing that really made me push myself during Malaysia Week was when we went caving and white water rafting. I am a bit nervous, because I have never done it before; it's my first time trying these new activities. …. I wished that before the trip I knew that even if I didn't pair up with my friends, it can still be really fun. I will see other friends and make new friends.”

“If I had to pick one single minute from Malaysia Week to play on a loop, it would be the moment when we arrived at our camp and everyone squatted around the campfire, chatting randomly. The campfire wasn’t just for fun—it was made to create smoke and keep the bees away. Even though it had a practical purpose, the atmosphere around it felt relaxed and joyful. That minute was significant because it showed me how even a simple, necessary action can turn into a moment of connection and happiness.”

“On the fourth day of Malaysia Week, seven of the girls and I sat in the back of the truck, on the way to and from the hike we did in the jungle. We were all singing together and making jokes. It felt like so much fun, being with people I wouldn't usually hang out with, who I probably might not have even met without Malaysia Week, and just all laughing and singing.”

Appreciation for Nature and Malaysia

“Sometimes the hardest things can look like the easiest things. One thing that pushed me was planting mangroves at the mangrove forest. I had spent hours trekking through the relentless heat, yet I was relishing all of it. I was experiencing nature, despite how uncomfortable it had felt.”

“The single minute I would pick to keep replaying was when I saw the beach as the sun was setting. To me, this helped show me that we can have natural beauties like this if we take steps towards protecting our ecosystems, which moved me a lot. The sunset was incredibly beautiful and against the ocean it was even better.”

“One thing that really pushed me to do better during Malaysia Week was how damaged the corals were. This made me want to clean the corals to help slow the growth of the algae. This pushed me outside my comfort zone because I've never seen the world underwater. From this, I was surprised by how well I managed my buoyancy and confidence underwater. In the first few dives, I was a bit nervous; however, after a few dives, I felt more confident.”

“This site had a lot of great memories and =made me overcome many challenges! One of my biggest fears was bugs. After this trip, I had a lot of moments that freaked me out... However, on day 3 I became totally fine with them and it turns out that now, I am quite interested in them! Overall, this trip helped me to get to know a lot of friends and gave me a lot of unforgettable memories... I loved this trip!”
