Let’s Iftar: Celebrating Community, Culture, and Connection at ISKL

Ramadan celebration at ISKL

Iftar: the breaking of fast at sunset during Ramadan that allows friends and family to gather in unity.

At ISKL, community is at the heart of everything we do—and the PTA event Let’s Iftar was a glowing example of how our diverse school family comes together to celebrate, learn, and connect.

Held in the Melawati Theatre on March 7, this special event transformed the space into a vibrant gathering place where over 400 guests shared the sacred tradition of breaking fast. With traditional food, cultural showcases, and student performances, Let’s Iftar invited everyone to experience the significance of Ramadan in a deeply meaningful way.

Organized by dedicated parents and PTA Let’s Iftar Co-Chairs Sajida O. and Sara M., alongside a team of passionate volunteers, the event was a heartfelt reflection of ISKL’s inclusive spirit and commitment to honoring our host country, Malaysia.

“After moving to Malaysia and seeing how different cultures are celebrated at ISKL, I proposed an open house or an Iftar to the PTA. This was welcomed, and we had our first-ever PTA Let’s Iftar last year in 2024.

Being the event's chair and seeing it all come together was phenomenal. Helping to organize such a meaningful gathering gave me a chance to see firsthand how powerful a community can be.

This year, as co-chairs with Sara, we were able to take the event to even greater heights. It has been an incredibly rewarding experience. From coordinating logistics to working with an amazing team, every part of the process reminded me why this event matters. Seeing students, employees, and families from all backgrounds come together to share a meal and connect during Ramadan was truly heartwarming—it made all the hard work worth it! I sincerely hope the PTA Let’s Iftar continues to be celebrated year after year at ISKL, bringing communities together!”

The evening was a joyful blend of education and celebration. Guests enjoyed a fashion show, musical performances, and cultural presentations, with students serving as emcees. One standout performance was the heartwarming rendition of “Ramadan Around the World,” sung by 40 ISKL students.

“One of the most memorable moments was when 40 ISKL students came together to perform the Ramadan Around the World song. There’s nothing quite like hearing children’s voices raised in song. The lyrics were displayed on a screen for all to see, so it quickly became a community sing-along. Many parents, especially mothers who had practiced the song at home with their children, joined in—and before long, the entire hall, nearly 400 people, was singing together - It was a beautiful, unifying experience.

Ramadan is deeply meaningful to me, and seeing it celebrated this way—through joy, music, and shared connection—was incredibly special. Ramadan isn’t limited to a country or a religion. It’s about spreading goodness, charity, and love. That moment captured all of that and more.”

The event was also a space for reflection. Through storytelling and student-led presentations, attendees explored the meaning of sawm (fasting) and how it encourages self-discipline and spiritual growth. It was a shared moment to pause, reflect, and appreciate the values that bind us together.

In true ISKL fashion, Let’s Iftar was not just about celebration but also about giving back. During the month of Ramadan, the community came together for the Ramadan Gifting Drive, creating 120 gift bags with handmade cards from Elementary School students for ISKL’s cleaning, gardening, and security staff.

In addition, the Let’s Iftar event raised RM 2,000 for Save School, an organization supporting refugee education in Malaysia—a testament to our community’s compassion and generosity.

Thank you again to Co-Chairs Sajida O. and Sara M., the PTA, student performers, volunteers, and everyone who made this event so special. Let’s Iftar was more than a meal—it was a moment of shared humanity, learning from each other, and strengthening the bonds that make ISKL a truly inclusive and dynamic global community.
