Learning in Elementary School

Our Elementary School students embark on their educational journey guided by ‘The Melawati Way,’ a code of behavior that encourages students to “Take Care of Yourself, Take Care of Others, and Take Care of This Place.”

This approach instills values of self-care, empathy, and environmental stewardship through activities like service and sustainability learning practices. Students learn compassion for others, respect for our planet, and cultivate a strong sense of responsibility, laying the foundation to become lifelong learners and leaders.

Our future readiness framework, based on ISKL values, is built on six key elements, innovation, agency, empathy, action, discovery, and inclusion, and is designed to complement the curriculum. In a collaborative environment, students engage in inquiry-based learning, exploring new concepts and viewing challenges as opportunities.

Agency fosters self-directed actions, empowering students to pursue personal growth. Inclusion ensures that every student has access to a rich educational experience, regardless of background.

We emphasize developing self-regulation and self-awareness, helping students understand their impact on others. These experiences nurture empathetic young leaders, eager to collaborate and thrive in a diverse world, committed to making a positive difference.

The entire ES program ensures that students have access, growth and challenge whilst engaging in collaborative, hands-on and authentic learning experiences in a safe and inclusive environment.

Early Childhood Program

At ISKL, we are committed to sparking a lifelong passion for learning in our youngest students and helping them grow into confident, compassionate, and curious individuals.

Our Early Childhood Program, encompassing Prep Reception, Prep Junior, and Prep Senior, is dedicated to nurturing students’ curiosity and love for learning through guided inquiry and play.

We believe in the holistic development of students by creating a warm and supportive environment that fosters social, emotional, cognitive, physical, and creative growth. Our engaging experiences in both structured and imaginative settings ensure that our students feel valued and inspired.

Starting in Prep Senior, our World Language program introduces Bahasa Melayu, Chinese and Spanish, broadening cultural horizons and enriching their early educational journey.

Grades 1-5

Our curriculum provides a strong foundation in Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Science, complemented by specialized instruction in Visual Arts, Music, and Physical Education. Information Literacy, Health, Service Learning, and Sustainability Education are seamlessly integrated, fostering well-rounded development.

Students have access to an extensive library collection, technology, science labs, and a Makerspace, creating an environment rich with opportunities for exploration and discovery.

Progress is assessed through a combination of teacher observations, classwork, common assessment tasks, and unit projects, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of each student’s growth.

We believe in the benefits of supportive partnership between parents, teachers, and students. Parent Teacher Conferences are conducted twice a year to share students’ work, discuss progress, and develop goals for the remainder of the semester.

In Grades 2 to 5, students take an active role in sharing their learning during student-led conferences, empowering them to take ownership of their educational journey.

At ISKL, we are committed to fostering a caring and inspiring learning environment where students can thrive, discover their passions, and develop the skills needed to make a positive impact on the world.

Service Learning

The Elementary School is dedicated to broadening students' understanding of service by integrating service actions into their learning through the curriculum. Students learn how to identify service opportunities in the school, locally and globally.

Engaging in service projects and learning about sustainability helps students develop a sense of community, environmental stewardship, and global responsibility. These experiences foster critical thinking, compassion, and a proactive attitude toward creating a sustainable future.

Integrating these principles early on empowers students to positively impact our world and prepares them to address the challenges of tomorrow with confidence and creativity.

Grade 5 student leaders

Student Leadership Program

Every Grade 5 student embarks on a transformative journey through our Red Hat Program, a dynamic leadership development experience. As the eldest students, they lead with purpose, providing community service to the school and throughout the community.

Red Hats conduct inspiring assemblies, make important announcements, and organize impactful, divisional community service activities and schedule special dress days, which become unique fundraising opportunities for charities they've carefully researched.

Through this program, students cultivate leadership skills, empathy, and a profound sense of responsibility, making a lasting difference in their community.

Discovery All the Way - ISKL ES After School Program

The After School Activities Program is an important and vibrant part of our educational mission for students. To develop the whole child, ISKL provides opportunities for children to explore hobbies, sports, and interests beyond the school curriculum.

Clubs and activities offer opportunities for children to develop their confidence and self-esteem, and allow children to interact with pupils other than their classmates. These activities vary from year to year as teachers and parents apply their experience and enthusiasm to develop unique opportunities for students.

Visual and performing arts are well represented in the activities program. The arts have the power to transform children’s lives and have a positive impact on development. Performance groups are given opportunities to display their talents and skills through venues or exhibitions appropriate to the learning experience.

Explore Beyond the Classroom

Field trips and short camps are vital for elementary school students, offering hands-on learning experiences that enrich classroom education. These adventures spark curiosity, foster teamwork, and build independence, allowing students to explore new environments and cultures.

By stepping outside the classroom, children connect their lessons to real-world experiences, deepening their understanding and retention. These activities also promote social skills and resilience, helping students grow into well-rounded, confident individuals.
