Earlier in April, The International School of Kuala Lumpur (ISKL) was featured in the online lifestyle magazine Hong Kong Tatler, named as one of the green schools in the world which have embraced sustainability with its design and approach to education.
The article recognizes ISKL as the first in Malaysia ‘to achieve a platinum Green Building Index ranking for sustainable design’.
The article continues, that ‘along with receiving the “World Wildlife Fund for Nature’s Eco-Schools Green Flag award, ISKL has created a rooftop urban farm that introduces the concept of permaculture to its students.”
ISKL has always taken pride in its approach to sustainability, having been a recipient of the Eco-Schools Green Flag Award since 2013 – an internationally recognized award for excellence in environmental action and learning.
ISKL not only practices sustainability in its design but also its educational program with K-12 initiatives across the entire school. ISKL students have recently been involved in a variety of Earth Week activities in April following the goals of sustainability practices, learning new skills, self-directed learning, and resilience in the face of challenges.
Earth Week had themes of REfuse, REuse, REduce, REstore, and REthink all conducted at home during the Movement Control Order, culminating with a grand video message from all levels in the school.

Many parents nowadays are abandoning traditional school methods and gravitating in favor of alternative educational models.
The article concludes that climate change, over-farming, and an uncertain global environment are aspects that cannot be ignored, and there is a need for a more sustainable approach to living – to equip our next generation of students with future-ready skills for the 21st century.
