Last week, students from The International School of Kuala Lumpur (ISKL) were among the many hundreds of thousands of students around the world waiting for the results of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) and Advanced Placement (AP) examinations taken in May 2019.

As in previous years, ISKL outperformed the worldwide IB Diploma average score by over 5 points with a Diploma average of 35.3 points. The worldwide IB Diploma average was 29.6 points.  Four students from ISKL were among 213 students worldwide to achieve a perfect score of 45 points, and two students scored 44 points, placing them in the top one percent of IBDP candidates worldwide. In total, twenty two percent of students scored 40 or more points which typically places them in the top ten percent of worldwide results. Twenty two percent of the students who undertook the program earned a Bilingual Diploma.

As the longest running IB World School in Malaysia, 1,427 students have graduated from ISKL with an IB Diploma over the past 28 years, representing a ninety-six percent pass rate. Mr. Michael Ortiz, ISKL’s International Baccalaureate (IB) and Advanced Placement (AP) Coordinator said, “With a worldwide pass rate consistently around eighty percent, whether with a minimum 24 or maximum 45, earning the IB Diploma is an accomplishment to be celebrated. This year, ninety-two percent of our candidates earned the IB Diploma, representing 101 students. Through hard work, perseverance, and commitment to taking on challenges and new experiences, we celebrate each one and his or her success in a formidable academic program.”

ISKLs academic track record was reinforced by the school’s 2019 AP results with 64% of ISKL students in AP classes who took the exam in May scoring either 4.0 and 5.0. This represents students who are ‘very well qualified’ or ‘extremely well qualified’ respectively according to the AP standards.

ISKL is one of the only schools in Kuala Lumpur to offer students the flexibility of taking either the two-year IBDP or combining individual IB, AP and High School Diploma courses. Individualization is the cornerstone of the academic experience at ISKL and enables students to customize their education program depending on their interests, abilities and university aspirations.

Mr. Ortiz notes that the flexibility of ISKL’s High School curriculum “ensures our students are best placed to apply to their universities of choice, in their countries of choice. ISKL graduates are in demand all over the world. The Class of 2019 received more than 400 acceptances from over 200 international universities, in 14 countries around the world, including the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Netherlands, Australia, Korea and Hong Kong”.
