Inspire Places: Painting a Lasting Legacy Through Art

ISKL Mural Blog Post

Whether hosting visiting schools for sporting tournaments, preparing for a Model United Nations conference, or rehearsing the latest musical, ISKL’s campus is always a hive of activity on the weekend!

On a sunny Saturday in May, ISKL’s community of budding artists gathered to help paint a 10-meter-long mural designed by Malaysian street artist and self-taught illustrator Fritilldea. Beginning in the morning and continuing until late afternoon, students from each division, parents, alumni, and employees signed up for 30-minute slots, filling in the outline that Fritilldea had painted freehand earlier. As shown in the time-lapse video, the event offered a day of creativity and fun, resulting in a colorful and lasting legacy for the entire ISKL community.

Panthers of all ages joined for a fun and collaborative mural art painting experience!

A special moment between Fritilldea and ES students during the community art mural painting session.

Malaysian artist Fritilldea joins some of ISKL’s youngest creatives in creating a colorful and memorable community art project.

This collaborative mural project was one of the many highlights of ISKL’s annual two-week Middle School (MS) Arts Festival, which saw more than 450 of ISKL’s MS students engaged in activities ranging from student-led workshops and open mic sessions to ensemble acting and public speaking.

Middle School art teachers and organizers of the community art project, Meg Baxter and Will Simmonds, shared, “The community mural was a fun and meaningful way to bring people together through art. It turned individual contributions into a lasting reflection of who we are and strengthened our sense of community and belonging.”

Furthermore, this latest artwork was made possible thanks to the Inspire Campaign, which has brought in talented creatives and sports coaches from around the world for additional learning experiences, enhanced campus spaces, and acquired new state-of-the-art equipment. It also supports the ISKL Pathways Scholarships program, a merit- and needs-based scholarship for Malaysian students to pursue four years of study in the High School Program.

The Freedom mural now brings plenty of color and meaning to our Middle School hallway.

✨ Introducing “Freedom” – a bright and colorful mural designed by Fritilldea and painted by our ISKL community.

The mural, aptly titled "Freedom," was completed through the collective effort of students, families, and ISKL employees under the guidance of Fritilldea. Freedom reflects the community collaboration’s vision and, as Fritilldea explains, it "embodies the spirit of creative expression and the release that occurs when art is made freely - without judgment, rules, or expectation." This philosophy aligns with ISKL’s commitment to critical thinking, artistic expression, innovation, and building culturally aware communicators.

Fritilldea is known for creating large murals across Kuala Lumpur, including work for Balai Seni Negara, otherwise known as the National Art Gallery of Malaysia. With the input of ISKL’s community, he also designed the Middle School Panther statue, unveiled at the school’s 60th Anniversary earlier in the year.

Fritilldea was on hand throughout the community painting session to encourage and guide, “Skill was never a barrier; what mattered was the willingness to create together.” He further described how the act of painting went beyond coloring a wall; it was an opportunity for members of the ISKL community to express themselves and to embrace the liberating joy of creation. “They planted seeds of creativity, connection, and courage. Perhaps, for some, this simple moment of participation will become the spark that lights a greater artistic journey,” added Fritilldea.

The Freedom Community Art Mural not only enhances ISKL’s campus visually but also symbolizes ISKL’s identity and values. It remains a lasting legacy, reminding all who pass by of what can be achieved when people unite through art.
