IASAS Baseball and Softball Championships: Competition, Community, and Connection

In April, The International School of Kuala Lumpur (ISKL) hosted the IASAS Baseball and Softball Championships 2026, featuring all six IASAS member schools, with visiting teams from across the region competing on campus. At the same time, ISKL Badminton, Golf, and Track and Field teams were representing the school at Jakarta Intercultural School and Singapore American School.

This year’s Baseball and Softball Championships marked the first time the tournament had been held on the ISKL campus. As High School Principal Jeff Farrington shared at the opening ceremony, “Years from now, when people talk about the inaugural IASAS Baseball and Softball Championships at ISKL, they will be talking about you: the teams, the plays, the moments that define this year’s tournament on our campus. That sense of history in the making adds an extra layer of excitement to every pitch, swing, and play.”

For the student-athletes, IASAS is not only an opportunity to compete at a high level and represent their school, but it is also an opportunity to be part of something they will remember long after graduation. For Boys’ Varsity Baseball player Aidan P. (’26), the experience was deeply personal. “Sharing the field one last time, putting together all we have worked for throughout the season, is where this team truly became a family, and that was evident. That sense of euphoria in the last inning, propelling us to victory, was quite surreal and was a great moment to share.”

Moments like these defined the three days. On the field, students faced pressure, setbacks, and the highs and lows of competition. Off the field, they supported teammates, connected with peers from other schools, and embodied what it means to compete with respect.

The ISKL girls’ softball team showed this resilience clearly. After missing out on the championship game, they regrouped and fought back to win bronze. Michaela U. (’26) reflected on the game. “The mental aspect is incredibly important. We were down 0–5 in the first two innings. Many times, this creates a huge mental hurdle that’s extremely difficult to overcome. Nevertheless, our team managed to do just that and win the game 13 to 5. Everyone’s individual efforts and their belief that this is not how we’re going to end IASAS led to our victory and is something I am incredibly proud of.”

Experiences like this, where students are challenged and tested, are at the heart of IASAS. While students compete to win, they also learn to handle pressure, work as a team, and grow through both success and disappointment.

While athletes take center stage on the diamond, hosting the tournament is a community-wide experience. Visiting student-athletes were hosted by ISKL families, who provided accommodation, meals, and transport, while the parent-led Booster Club ensured visiting parents, coaches, and supporters felt welcomed on campus. From the bleachers to the Prowlzone, where students and visiting families could try pitching for themselves, to food trucks and music that brought people together, the event embodied ISKL’s Panther spirit.

Beyond the games, it was the connections that stood out, cross-cultural friendships formed, team commitment strengthened, and shared experiences that will be remembered long after the tournament. These moments are shaped by how students carry themselves within IASAS, not just the level of competition, but how they manage nerves, support one another, and respond when things do not go their way. This is where confidence is built, and character takes shape.

Experiences like IASAS are part of ISKL’s broader approach to learning, where cocurricular programs are seen as an essential part of a student’s education. Whether on the field, on the stage, or in the orchestra pit, or across ISKL’s wide range of other activities, students are encouraged to explore their interests, develop their competencies, and discover their passions.

Student life at ISKL is not only about achievement, but it’s also about belonging, growth, and the opportunity for each child to find their place and contribute.
