FUTURE-READY-EDUCATION INTERNATIONAL-MINDEDNESS DYNAMIC-COMMUNITY GLOBAL-OPPORTUNITIESOn September 25, 2021 ISKL hosted its first-ever virtual Bioverse International conference, a platform for young scientists worldwide to join together and further their knowledge

Bioverse International started as a passion project created by High School students Ruby L. (’23), HongJu L. (’22), Kunwoo L. (’25), Pedro OV. (’24), and Rika S. (’24).

Where students from ISKL and other international schools worldwide convene and meet with professionals in the fields of biology, chemistry, and medicine to share their research and experiences in their chosen field.

Ruby, who initiated the project, says this was her way of contributing to the ISKL community. “I love the world of biology and sciences, and my passion has led me to contemplate how I can use this to further unite people in our community who have the same passion as me. I spent the summer break formulating and organizing my ideas about bringing about and improving our community in the field of science,’ shares Ruby.

Ruby also shares how she researched ideas by finding out what other schools are doing, asking her parents, and emailing faculty such as Jennifer Brems, Sim Huang, and Josh Weiner. She pitched her idea of creating a virtual platform for students in and outside of ISKL to share insights into the sciences through a conference format.

“My vision was to invite ISKL alumni working in the fields of biology, chemistry, and medicine to experience what working there would look like and include an international approach by connecting with students from other international schools. I genuinely think this is such a valuable opportunity for the students to get a deeper insight into the sciences, and we hope that everyone is aware of this amazing opportunity.”

During the conference, participants heard from guest speaker and ISKL alumni Dr. Elena Azizan (’05), who shared her research paper and guided students on how she started, conducted experiments, wrote research papers, and more, followed by a short question and answer session.
