How ISKL Supports Students and Families Through School Transitions in an International Community

Students from Elementary, Middle, and High School join ISKL’s Panther mascot, to celebrate the friendships, warm welcomes, and connections that support every transition across the school.

Starting something new, saying goodbye, or staying while others leave. In an international school community, all three are part of the experience, and often, they are felt all at once.

With more than 60 nationalities represented, The International School of Kuala Lumpur is a place where students and families from around the world come together to learn, connect, and grow. While international life brings moments of change, it also creates opportunities to build meaningful friendships, gain new perspectives, and develop confidence. At ISKL, these moments are approached with care so that every student and family feels supported, understood, and a strong sense of belonging throughout their journey. This is guided by Transitions Care at ISKL, a cross-divisional team that works closely with the community to ensure every transition is thoughtful, connected, and responsive to the needs of students and families.

That sense of care begins from the moment a family enrolls and carries through every stage of their ISKL journey. New students and parents are welcomed through dedicated orientation days, parent gatherings, and support from the PTA network, helping them feel part of the community early on. Parent workshops help families as they settle in, while students are supported through peer connections, including Peer Helpers, who help them find their feet both socially and emotionally. For older students, early access to their counselor provides another layer of reassurance. A dedicated website also ensures families have the information they need as they prepare for and begin their ISKL experience.

As students grow, those same structures continue to guide them through key moments within the school. Moving from Elementary to Middle School, or into High School, is thoughtfully supported so that students feel ready, both academically and emotionally. “Stepping into Middle School” brings Grade 5 families together for an information session that offers a clear and practical introduction to what lies ahead. A similar “Welcome to High School” experience supports Grade 8 families, helping them understand expectations, explore subject choices, and feel confident about the transition into High School.

As students move into their final year, the transition takes on a different meaning. In Grade 12, parent sessions help families understand what to expect in the lead-up to graduation, from key events and IB and AP examinations to results and the transition to life beyond ISKL. Counselors work alongside families to provide practical guidance and reassurance during this time, as well as helping parents navigate the transition beyond graduation, from letting go and adjusting to new dynamics to supporting their child’s independence and well-being.

At the same time, ISKL recognizes that not every transition is about moving forward. For some families, it is about moving on. Leaving a school community can bring a mix of emotions, and these moments are handled with the same level of care. Counselors and teachers work closely with students to help them reflect on their experiences and prepare for what comes next. Through sessions based on the RAFT framework, students and parents are guided to reconcile, affirm, say their farewells, and think ahead, giving them a sense of closure and readiness. Opportunities to acknowledge their time at ISKL, along with workshops and shared resources for parents, help make the process feel supported and positive.

And for those who stay, support continues in equally important ways. In a mobile community, students can experience the loss of friends and familiar networks. ISKL provides support to help them process these changes, stay connected, and continue to feel a strong sense of belonging.

This approach is strengthened through ISKL’s membership in Safe Passage Across Networks (SPAN), an international non-profit focused on supporting students, families, and educators through transitions, particularly within international schools. ISKL’s Head of School Rami Madani also serves as an Honorary Board Member of SPAN, further reinforcing the school’s commitment to leading and shaping best practices in transition care.

At ISKL, while change is a natural part of the journey, it is never faced alone. With the support of counselors, educators, and a strong culture of care across the school, each transition becomes an opportunity for growth, helping students and families move forward with confidence, curiosity, and a lasting sense of connection.

From first hello to final farewell, these traditions capture the spirit of ISKL.

ISKL’s Back to School Bash welcomes new and returning families with energy, connection, and a strong sense of belonging. At the end of the school year, Clap Out sees parents, faculty, and staff line the corridors to say jumpa lagi (see you later) to students, whether they are leaving for the summer or beginning a new chapter beyond ISKL.

Every beginning is met with a warm welcome, and every ending is marked with care.
