Service Learning & Sustainability
Service Learning
Service Learning is at the heart of our curriculum, shaping ISKL students into global learners with enduring values. Our school encourages students to engage in a diverse range of clubs, fostering engaging, inclusive, and challenging experiences while honing leadership and communication skills.
Our student-led clubs span various areas:
- Sustainability
- Advocacy
- Humanities
- Wellness
- STEM
These clubs not only nurture new passions but also foster lasting friendships across grades and divisions. Through a wide array of co-curricular activities, students are empowered to make meaningful contributions to their communities, engaging in solution planning and action.
At ISKL, we believe in empowering students as agents of change. Our curriculum emphasizes community understanding and involvement, offering platforms like service forums with inspiring speakers and student-led initiatives focused on service.
Service Learning, or active community involvement, instills core values in our students, fostering a deep sense of personal impact and responsibility for environmental and societal change.
ISKL provides a wide array of service-based clubs and activities and experiential learning programs such as the Global Action Program, offering students engaging, inclusive, and challenging opportunities to develop leadership skills, pursue interests, and connect with peers.
Through meaningful partnerships, our students actively contribute to addressing United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), creating positive change locally and beyond:
- Supporting communities in need in Kuala Lumpur and surroundings
- Partnering with Refugee Learning Centers
- Collaborating with residential homes for medical condition victims
- Engaging with sustainability organizations
These efforts align with our School-wide Learning Results (SLRs), encouraging students to Live Ethically, Collaborate Constructively, and Think Critically. Students learn that every action, no matter how small, can have a profound impact on their communities.

Sustainability
ISKL is a member of the Eco-Schools Organization and was the first school in Malaysia to receive the internationally acclaimed Green Flag Award in 2013 for excellence in environmental action and learning and Malaysia’s Green Building Index platinum rating for sustainable design.
The Eco-Schools Programme is coordinated by the WWF (World Wildlife Fund) in Malaysia. It is the largest sustainable school program in the world, with 52,000 schools registered in 67 countries.
At ISKL, sustainability is not just a concept but a way of life. The school’s commitment to sustainability is ingrained in its curriculum and culture. The campus, designed with sustainability in mind, serves as a real-life learning environment for students.
For instance, the building management system is not just a tool for managing resources but also a teaching tool that shows real-time resource consumption. This interactive approach encourages students to actively seek ways to save energy, fostering a culture of sustainability.
Living ethically is an ISKL initiative for all community members to demonstrate personal and social responsibility in the care and working conditions for ourselves and others. Sustainability clubs include Earth Club and Gardening Club, aiming to create awareness and change throughout the school.
Alongside these projects are organized events and activities that implement strategies to reduce energy consumption and resource waste, such as monthly community recycling day, community food waste initiative, etc.
Across all three divisions of ISKL, the teaching and learning focus leans towards supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These collectively provide inspiration for teacher/student-led future initiatives focusing on encouraging and empowering students to adopt a positive perspective with an international mindset while collaborating towards shared sustainability goals.
