BAND
Four band level classes are:

Beginning Band (6)
This class offers an opportunity for students to start instruction on a band instrument (not piano or guitar) and includes instruction in basic technical skills and reading of music notation. Assistance will be given in the choice of instrument. In most cases students will need to purchase their own instrument. Tutor books with a CD accompaniment for home rehearsal will need to be purchased through the school.

Junior Band (6)
This class is for those students who have been learning a band instrument for one year, as a 5th grader at Melawati, or in their previous school. This band class will further develop playing and
music reading skills.

Intermediate Band (7/8)
This band will cater to the needs of those students who have played a band instrument for more than 1 year, and have reached a suitable standard on their chosen instrument. First year learners may enter this band at the discretion of the band teacher.

Senior Band (7/8)
Senior band will play more challenging music. This band is for students who have played an instrument for one year or who are at a suitable level according to the band teacher’s discretion.

Vocal Works (6)
This class has as its focus the human voice. The goal is to increase and expand the knowledge and experience of the students in all aspects of vocalization. Students study vocal works in many cultures and the way the voice can be used and trained. Students also examine popular music, jazz, show, classic and choral pieces. This involve some listening and discussion. The practical work starts with learning about one's self. It includes singing in harmony and reading music.

World Music (7)
This trimester-long course, required for non-band students, iis aimed at exposing the students to differing cultures as well as their music and instruments. Students will play a variety of instruments and listen to a wide range of musical styles from around the world.

Choir (7/8)
The emphasis in this trimester-long course is placed on a more conscious approach to vocal techniques such as tone quality, balance, intonation and stage presence. The choir works toward a strong and cohesive group performance.

Theatre Arts I (6)
This required trimester-long course is designed to introduce students to creative opportunities for development of self-expression, self awareness, and self-confidence. These areas are explored through a variety of dramatic modes such as theatre games, mime, improvisation, and group presentations. Course evaluation is based on effort, participation,following directions, willingness to try new ideas, imagination and group work rather than acting skills.

Theatre Arts II (7)
This course is an extension of the Theatre Arts I class in which sixth graders were introduced to creative drama and the basic principles of theatre and presentation skills. In Theatre Arts II much more emphasis is placed on physical and vocal development in order to become more effective presenters and performers, role playing groups, projects and performances will be an important part of the course evaluation.

Ensemble Theater (8)
The purpose of this course is to provide opportunities for students to work cooperatively and collaboratively in order to form a Theatre Ensemble. The emphasis will be on acting skills, the creative process, and performance of theatre pieces.

Speech & Debate (8)
Students will be introduced to the basic elements of informative and persuasive speaking. There will be opportunities for practice and presentation of formal and informal speeches. Students will also hone their research skills on a variety of topics, gain insight into logical fallicies and practice debate skills under a modified high school format.

Dance Experience (7/8)
This course is designed to generate an interest, enthusiasm and appreciation of dance. Students will explore the spectrum of dance and dance styles. They will experience a range of dance activities that explore the origins of dance, basic movement and dance skills leading up to choreography and performance.
