“John Marsden may well be Australia's most influential author. With more than 30 books and over three million sales, he's certainly one of its most successful. The undisputed king of teenage fiction, his controversial, often dark novels, have bought him a devoted following, and not just in Australia.”

“JOHN MARSDEN: No. I'm not into writing Australian books. In fact, I don't even use the word 'Australia' in the books. I try and avoid it because I'm not a fan of that kind of flag-waving, 'Waltzing Matilda'-singing, jingoistic patriotism that seems to have infested so many countries. I don't think that's helpful at all. So I try to write about universal situations, universal themes and universal humans. And I really made that decision quite consciously when I started writing, that I wanted to write about the things that have always been important for humans. And those haven't changed really from generation to generation.”
