Practical Computer Use
One semester; 0.5 credit (offered both semesters); Grades 9-12
Credit/Degree of Difficulty: Regular
Prerequisite: None
Homework: Light to Average
Personal Computer Use will provide
students with a general background
of computer basics and with a wide
variety of computer applications.
Students will study the following
topics in depth: hardware identification
and use (troubleshooting), word
processing, spreadsheets, graphics
and internet use as well as an
introduction to robotics and database
management. Integration of these
tools into the classroom and personal
setting will be stressed. Projects will
include techniques that can be directly
incorporated into school work. This
program is designed primarily for
students who need extra support in
technology. Students may request an
assessment to enter this course from
the counseling or technology office
at the suggestion of a teacher, parent
or counselor. Though not necessary,
skills acquired within this course
could be used to enhance the products
within ITGS.
Interactive Multimedia
One semester; 0.5 credit (offered both semesters); Grades 9-12
Credit/Degree of Difficulty: Regular
Prerequisite: Practical computer use or good comfort level with basic
computing skills.
Homework: Average
This course is an introductory
course to the world of hypermedia/
multimedia. After an introduction
to the elements of presentation,
students will investigate tools that
professional designers use to create
digital presentations and movies.
Computers are making it possible to
easily link together a wide variety of
text, graphic, sound, 3D animation, and
video media to promote meaningful
access to information. In this class,
students will learn how to create
different types of presentations and
information exploration materials
by incorporating these advanced
technologies. Emphasis will be placed
on design and quality of product
performance. The course is projectoriented,
and a large part of student
evaluation is based on lab exercises
that will be designed to meet the
individual interests of students in
authentic ways.
Students may take this course for art
credit, provided they first take Art I
Foundations. Students who have not
taken Art I Foundations may take this
course for a core elective.
Web Page Authoring
One semester; 0.5 credit (offered both semesters); Grades 9-12
Credit/Degree of Difficulty: Regular
Prerequisite: Practical computer use or good comfort level with basic
computing skills.
Homework: Average
The nature of the Web Page Authoring
course is to provide the student with
a solid background in the use of the
Internet, World Wide Web, and web
page design tools, including HTML,
XHTML, Java, Flash and Shock
Wave. The students will master
HTML tags to obtain a rudimentary
knowledge of how HTML is able to
convey instructions to web browsers.
This knowledge base will allow the
student to analyze the products of
other web page authors to determine
how more advanced HTML tags are
able to accomplish complex tasks.
The student will then be able to use
and evaluate the features of different
web page authoring programs
(editors). Emphasis will be placed on
the production of professional quality
web pages with a proper balance of
text, graphics and sound clips. The
course is project-oriented, and a large
part of student evaluation is based on
lab exercises that will be designed
to meet the individual interests of
students. Like Publications, students
will demonstrate this experience
in authentic ways by designing
web layouts for a variety of web
publications such as IASAS, and
internal web site projects for ISKL.
Skills acquired within the Interactive
Multimedia course could be used
to enhance the products within this
class.
Students may take this course for art
credit, provided they first take Art I
Foundations. Students who have not
taken Art I Foundations may take this
course for a core elective.
