This course will include an emphasis on
skill development, skill improvement,
leadership development and overall
knowledge of the sports/activities covered.
The program also focuses on a positive
attitude among students regarding
fitness, cooperation, participation and
an understanding of the importance of
physical well-being and its relationship to
a healthy and productive lifestyle.
In order to achieve these general objectives,
a diversified program is offered. This
year’s units will cover volleyball, soccer,
basketball, survival swimming, rock
climbing, badminton, track & field,
personal fitness, international games,
alternative games, creative games and
team-building activities.
Elective Physical Education
One semester; 0.5 credit (may be repeated for credit); Grades 10-12
Credit/Degree of Difficulty: Regular
Prerequisite: None

This course is usually taken in the 10th
grade and represents a continuation of
the Physical Education 9 course. Three of
the course’s six units are pre-determined
(ultimate Frisbee, water safety and
self-defense). For the remaining three
units, students vote on which activities
to participate in from the following list:
field/floor hockey, touch rugby, softball,
yoga, flag football, tennis, aerobics and
Tae Bo.
Lifeguard Training
One semester; 0.5 credits; Grades 10*-12
Credit/Degree of Difficulty: Regular
Prerequisite: *Students must be 15 years of age by the end of the course and be comfortable with their swimming skills. Students will complete a pre-course swim assessment on the first day of class.

The purpose of this American Red
Cross Lifeguard Training course is to
teach lifeguard candidates the skills
and knowledge needed to prevent and
respond to aquatic emergencies. The
course content and activities prepare
candidates to recognize and respond
quickly and effectively to emergencies
and prevent drowning and injuries. Upon
successful completion of the course,
participants will receive two American
Red Cross certificates: Lifeguard
Training and First Aid (valid for three
years) and CPR for the Professional
Rescuer (valid for one year).
Personal Fitness
One semester; 0.5 credits (May be repeated for credit, but priority enrollment is given to students who have not previously taken this course); Grades 10-12

In recognizing the importance of current
trends toward healthier lifestyle choices,
this course concentrates primarily on
health-related aspects of physical
fitness, with opportunities to develop
performance or skill-related fitness
components. Students will learn to
diagnose their own fitness levels, and
design and implement a personal fitness
improvement program. Students will
learn basic relevant anatomy, physiology,
and fitness theory, as well as fitness
testing, test result evaluation, and
exercise prescription skills. Related
topics of exercise nutrition, weight and
stress management are also explored.
Students enrolled in the course must be
prepared to exercise vigorously and work
to improve their own personal fitness.

This course is designed to help students
prepare themselves for making
responsible decisions about their lives.
The curriculum includes wellness,
tobacco, alcohol and illegal drugs,
nutrition (including a self-study of food
intake and exercise habits), sexuality and
sexually transmitted diseases, CPR and
First Aid, stress management, depression
and teenage suicide. In addition, students
are given the chance to discuss issues that
are relevant to their own lives. Those
students who pass the necessary tests are
certified by the American Red Cross in
First Aid and CPR. |
