Policy for Malaysian Students to Study Bahasa Malaysia
Grade 9 & 10 Malaysian students will take Bahasa Malaysia at the appropriate
level, unless they “test out” with an in-house O-Level exam. Students who pass the
ISKL-administered exam will be exempted from BM, but will be required to take and
pass the official O-Level exam when offered the following May.
Grade 11, 12, & 13 students who are not full-IB Diploma candidates will take BM at
the appropriate level, unless they “test out” with an in-house O-Level exam or pass the
official O-Level exam. Students who pass the ISKL-administered exam will be exempted
from BM, but will be required to take and pass the official O-Level exam when offered
the following May.
Grade 11, 12, & 13 students who are full-IB Diploma candidates will be exempted from
the BM requirement. Again, if the student subsequently drops the IB program s/he would
be required to take BM (or test out) at the earliest possible convenience. Students may
choose BM as an IB subject, but those that do must be very well prepared, and most
likely will need outside tutoring in the language to pass the literature-based exam.
