LOW INTERMEDIATE LEVEL
Students who are non-native English speakers may
be designated as Low Intermediate English students after
placement testing.
They are scheduled for the following four English as
a Second Language classes:
- English Language Development
- ESL Social Studies
- Laboratory Science Transition
- Language Arts Transition
Students entering at Low Intermediate should not be placed higher than grade 9. Exceptional cases for grade 10 placements may be considered.
English Language Development (ELD)
One year; One credit; Grade 9

Instruction is in the four areas of language development: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Emphasis is given on learning English through the content that is taught in the mainstream ISKL classes.
ESL Social Studies (ESS)
One year; One credit; Grade 9

This course presents the basic skills, concepts, and vocabulary
found in the social sciences and, in particular, World
Studies I.
Laboratory Science Transition (LST)
One year; One credit; Grade 9
Credit/Degree of Difficulty: Regular

English language skills are presented through the content of general science, earth science and biology. This is the first semester of a year-long course that will help to prepare students for a smooth transition into the science program at ISKL.
Language Arts Transition (LAT)
One year; One credit; Grade 9

This course introduces students to the systematic study of literature. Students will read literature and respond both orally and in writing. Short stories and novels are the genres studied.
