Students in Grades Prep Senior to Grade 4 learn to play a variety of instruments. Singing skills are developed through songs that are tied to each grade level’s core curriculum. In Grade 5 students can either join the band program or be a part of a world music program. Band students learn to play an instrument of their choice. World music students learn to play a variety of instruments, including the gamelan. The music program is designed around the skills contained in the music standards:
- Singing a varied repertoire of music
- Performing a varied repertoire of music on instruments
- Composing and arranging music within specific guidelines
- Participating in musical performances
- Improvising melodies, variations, and accompaniments
- Understanding the relationship between music, history and culture
