The International Club and MYClub of the International School of Kuala Lumpur (ISKL) donated RM115,460, to be split equally between Shelter Home for Children and Pertubuhan Jalinan Kasih Anak-Anak Yatim/ Miskin Selangor dan Kuala Lumpur, recently.
The money was raised from a walkathon held on February 26, 2012 called Walk for Children: 1Malaysia.
At the cheque presentation ceremony recently, the head of school, Paul Chmelik expressed his admiration for the students for being service-minded and for the hard work the students put in reaching out to many people in the community. He also commended the International club and MY Club students for not only achieving their ultimate goal but also embracing cultural diversity and global unity.
Also present at the ceremony were representatives of the sponsors and children and volunteers from the two children’s homes.
International Club’s President, Nick Challis, 18 and his friends not only got their parents involved but also friends from other local and international schools who helped to get the word out.
Major sponsors were ConocoPhillips Asia, HESS Oil & Gas, Dell Computers, Nestle, Coca-Cola, Gold Coin Sdn Bhd, Allied Pickfords, Mentholatum, GlaxoSmithKline Malaysia, FE Brands, Revive, CIMB Bank, Permanis, Malayan Banking and Transpo Asian Tigers. Without the funding from these sponsors, we would not be able to host such a grand event and the contributions to the selected charities would not be as big.
“Through the support of local and international schools, families and friends, and our sponsors, we have truly achieved our goal of making this truly a 1Malaysia event,” said Nick Challis.
The walkathon received a huge turnout as members of the community participated in the carnival-like charity event held in Padang Merbok.
Cheok Hoong Poh , manager of Shelter Home for Children, said the fund would go to the children’s education, health, field trips and also to upgrade their living condition. The home has some 50 students at present and each year at least 10 students are in need of funds to further their education.
According to the chairman of the Pertubuhan Jalinan Kasih Anak-Anak Yatim/ Miskin Selangor dan Kuala Lumpur, Mohd Jawaher Arjab, they support live-in children at their home as well as others who live with their families or guardians.
“We are focusing on early education. We find that so many of the children registered with us are weak in several subjects and require extra help. The money will be used to pay teachers who are willing to come and teach,” said Jawaher.
