Communication – Help Us Help You – It’s a 70/30 Deal

I think we would all agree that excellent communication facilitates improved relationships and efficiency.  At ISKL we very much want to remain in excellent communication with parents and guardians.  The Friday Flash, Panther Apps, Hornbill, PowerSchool, Teacher Newsletters, Parent Conferences, GLC Meetings, PTA Meetings, Board Meetings, Head of School Coffees, and direct emails, SMS messages, phone calls, special topic meetings and even on-campus posters and electronic bulletin boards are all means by which we hope to convey information and keep in touch with you.  The message of this article, however, is that we can’t do it without your help.  We hope you might agree that a 70% us/30% you
communication ratio is reasonable.

Each year when I speak to new and veteran parents I emphasize our desire to communicate with families.  Good communication means fewer surprises and conflicts and more harmony and learning.  We don’t always get it right, because just like you, we are busy and engaged in a variety of tasks both at work and at home.  We really do put a great deal of time, however, into the task.  We firmly believe that as an organization the bulk of the responsibility lies with us to generate good communication.  Good communication, however, involves both parties making an effort to make it work.  This brings me to my 70/30 rule:  it can all work very well if the school commits to putting in 70% of the effort needed to connect – and you put in 30%.

I admit that I made up these percentages; they are not based on any kind of authoritative research.  They are based on nearly thirty-five years as an educator, thousands of home-school interactions, and the fact that I am simply trying to make the point that we are willing to do a lot, but we can’t do it all.  If you are interested in receiving the Friday Flash and it is not coming home regularly, you can get it on-line http://sites.google.com/a/iskl.edu.my/parents/.  Tell us if you are not receiving a communication supposedly sent to you so that we can at least have a chance to fix what went wrong.  Notify us of the best way to get information to you and make sure that the email address we have for you is up to date.
